Commercial Description:
Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus, from the botanical name for the hop plant. Confusingly, it also means bumble bee in Flemish. Poperings Hommelbier is a hoppy, golden-bronze, ale. It is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts.

It looks like I enjoyed this beer more than the average rater - but that sounds about right given that I prefer the lighter / sweeter / hoppier belgain ales. Definitely one of the best that fit the profile. Clem’s Bottle House

330 ml bottle purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington. D 04 10 notched on the bottom of the label. Pour is slight hazed golden orange with a ton of carbonation bubbles building up a one inch white head. Head breaks up with some large bubbles leaving behind some nice lacing. Aroma is straw clove and minty sweetness. Decent amount of herbal behind that - yeasty and gently layered complexity. Taste is very big herbal and cloves up front, followed by a phenolic honey sweetness transitioning to a dry straw through the finish. Interesting flavors, though were not nearly as gentle as the nose. Palate is medium, sweetness cloys a bit - though this is lifted by the higher carbonation and grassy dryness to the finish.

Bottle. Malt, fruit and discrete hops in aroma. Clear amber colour with white head. Bitter flavour well balanced with malts. Some yeast also. Not really challenging.

Saturated golden to orange color with chunky yeast flakes. Moderated white head with mentionable retention. The main impression about the aroma is estery, like banana and vanilla kidna fruitiness, almost reminiscent of a hefeweizen. Surprisingly easy on the palate at first. The flavor is a yeasty-sipcy composition of honey-sweet malts, yeasty candy sugars, green apples with mild citrusy hops on the back end. Gets more hefeweizen-like as you swallowed, but more tricky. Absolutely different than expected, but not bad.

Bottle. Poured gold with a thick lasting white head. Aroma had both malt and hop notes, the hop being more present. There was also a bit of spice underlying in the aroma. Flavor was of citrus hops with a bit of yeast flavor underlying. Didn’t feel right on the tongue.

On tap De Kring Poperinge. Very nice looking orange-blond beer with a fine off white head on top. Aroma is interesting with a nice dosis of soft smelling hops, malts and bread. Taste is medium full but turn dry and crisp in the finale.

Pours a beautiful golden with a thick white head that leaves plenty of lace. Aroma is subtle, of yeast and apple with a hint of spiciness. Taste is candy sugar, bread, and apple, which certainly comes out more when paired with a spicy food.

Bottle, 25 cl. Blonde, hazy beer with medium creamy white head that lasts. Looks beautiful. Grainy and hoppy smell, which is in fact a bit at the light side. The taste is grainy and hoppy, also a light bitter but full mouthtaste. Appetizing beer.

Golden-orange, long lasting medium sized white head, excellent lacing. Aroma is musty, herbal, yeasty, lemon citrus, floral. Flavour is of floral and herbal hops, moderate bitterness, quite a bit of citrus. Moderately bitter mouthfeel, medium body, high carbonation. Finishes long, bitter citrus.

Very nice, extremely refreshing. Wonderful balance.

750ml bottle obtained in a trade with TheCheeseMan, thanks Dan.
Opened on February 12, 2009.
Best before September 2008.
