Schroppfy (1729), Ohio, USA May 8, 2008 Grainy, buttered bread, some roasted coffee notes, nut meat, and a bit of an acrid, smoky jolt - tingly, even - this rocks my flavor world.
I drained one of these 22s the other night and am making a go for a second thanks to stefanje. This is a killer beer. The body is nice, not too full, but definitely characterful from the bottle-conditioning.
Goes down easy. Looks great. Gee, only gets a 3.7; no surprise there, this is criminally underrated.
lb4lb (1377), Austin, Texas, USA Sep 2, 2008 Bottle from stefanje. Thanks!
Pours black with a nice thick tan head. Smell is dull, roasty coffee beans. Nice nose. Flavor is subtle roasty malt and charcoal. Really pretty simple, with light charred bitterness in there, but very smooth, thin, and simple. Too thin of a mouthfeel, and just feels watery. Drinkable, but not enjoyable. mmm///beer (540), Austin, Texas, USA Sep 2, 2008 22 oz. bottle in trade from Snojerk321-thanks! Served in lager glass- poured non transparent black when held to light, low carbonation, dark tan head formed and laced nicely. Aroma of a darkened malt, brown sugar, espresso, and some grassy hop notes. Hits the mouth with a medium body, malt is tasty and has a nice sweetness note in the background, coffee and dark chocolate in the middle, finish is crisp and has a smoke element to it. Very interesting take on the style- and in 10 minutes the bottle was gone! zathrus13 (1063), Mount Laurel, New Jersey, USA Sep 1, 2008 Bottle. Pours black, with a brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, smoke, chocolate, and some coffee. Flavor is roasted malt, along with some smoke, hops, and chocolate. BrotherGrendel (135), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 23, 2008 On draft at Lost Abbey, made from the second runnings of the mashed grains from Serpents stout.
Appearance is pitch black hue, minimal head and lacing.
Smell is moderate coffee/espresso malts, hints of chocolate, roast, subtle grassy hops in the background.
Taste is a nice blend of coffee and roast malts with grassy bitter hops, lager yeast and nuts peek through and the roast borders on a smoky sensation, finishes bitter.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, creamy and smooth texture, mild carbonation.
Drinkability is moderate, this is a solid lager from LA with a good malt profile, big coffee/roast/smoke works well for this style, the alcohol is well-masked. DA (2419), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Aug 18, 2008 RBSG 2008. Pours dark brown with a smooth tan head. Roasty chocolate, like bitter bakers chocolate, that really brings out the bitterness of the beer. Stronger on the hops for a schwartz, good bitter chocolate finish.
