aracauna (2357), Georgia, USA Jul 20, 2007 Pours dark like a porter. It’s a bit hot with the alcohol, but this is fairly rich, a little chocolate, rum raisins. Nice body, but this would probably age nicely. psbrewlvr (15), Palm Springs, California, USA Jul 19, 2007 Very flat oily, Heavy Stout like, not really a beer but more like a port wine with chocolate infused. Similar in my opinion to some of those bigger brewers just trying to make high ABV brews muddyfeet (72), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Jul 19, 2007 Pours dark brown--almost black. Kind of like thinned out engine oil. Rather flat in appearance. Nose is heacy and damp-like. Really clings to the old nose hairs.
Strange example of they style but quite nice. Kind of a stout/brown ale hybrid. Thick and heavy flavors: coffee, roasted malts, chocoalte and licorice but with a brown ale consistency. Alcohol is fairly well hidden but comes out a bit as the beer warms. Not as heavy a mouthfeel as I expected but the hop and coffee bitterness makes it feel thicker than it really is. Good beer for consuming slowly but not one I would have repeatedly in one night. GG (1612), NorCal, California, USA Jul 17, 2007 NorCal tasting July 07 - I wished this beer was as good as the aroma, because if it was it’d be phenomenal. Instead, it’s barely above average at best. An incredible aroma of smoke, dark chocolate, dark fruits, and an odd touch of coffee (where’d that come from?). Appearance was a deep, dark chocolatey brown with a minimal head. Mouthfeel was thin. Flavor of molasses, dark chocolate, burned raisins, coffee and a touch of alcohol. The problem I had was that the flavors were just too weak. A somewhat jumbled mishmash of flavor with nothing really harmonizing. Still, a nice beer and perhaps a bit of age can make this good beer better. BeerVirgin72 (778), Pataskala, Ohio, USA Jul 15, 2007 Poured from 22 ounce bottle. Appearance was dark brown almost black and very thick. No light showing through. Thick light brown head. Aroma was of wood and coffee. Taste was black, strong coffee, and some wood, and slight chocolate taste. Finish was dry and very bitter. There was a slow alcohol burn in my throat long after I swallowed. Bottle says aged in Bourbon barrel, but beyond the light burn, I did not really taste the bourbon at all, which I think served this beer well. DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Jul 9, 2007 Bomber on 7/5/07. Many thanks to WeeHeavySD for this one. This poured out an nearly opaque black-brown with a long lasting dark tan head. Invitingly complex aroma of chocolate, espresso, molasses, and dark fruit. Mouthfeel is rich, thick, with low carboantion and some astringency. Dark, burnt caramel sweetness offset by a subdued bitterness. Finishes dry, but not really too bitter. Very enjoyable. Kristatos (6), USA does not count Jul 9, 2007 Everything about this beer starts off great - nice pour, head, color and aroma. Initial taste is full of flavors from roasted and specialty grains, but quickly overpowered by astringent "back of the tongue" taste possibly from tannin due to barrel aging. IMHO this beer would be better if aged w/out the barrel, or possibly I just got my bombers from a batch that was aged in younger barrels which imparted more tannin. I love Port’s beers, but won’t grab this one again. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA Jul 9, 2007 Pitch black with a weak brown head. Sweet aroma has notes of molasses, chocolate, dried fruit, coffee, and roasted nuts. Full bodied, low carbonation, and a slightly oily feel. Good flavor. The chocolate and coffee come out with some touches of a molasses cookie.
