Commercial Description:
Definitely not your Dad's Wimpy 30 weight. An enormous & luscious dark ale that's as opaque and dark as the most well used motor oils.

Bottle at Tuulensuu, Tampere Very dark. Immediate roasted aroma comes over from the bottle. Slightly sweet imperial aroma. It’s a familiar but good aroma. Pretty tasty in that same vein - similar to others of its style, such that it doesn’t actually stand out. Slightly sweet, burnt. Salmiakki and a hint of pepperiness in the finish adds a little complexity but still not so much. As I go down the glass, the sense that I’ve had it before grows. Unusually, Phil did not share this.

Bottle that came in the Port Brewing and Lost Abbey boxes of beers from Phil L’s, Beer Merchants, cheers Phil for the nod on when these beers were in, consumed 18-01-09. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is of hot diluted steaming coffee with some sticky wet prunes and light alcohol coming through. The taste is citrus and coffee fighting it out and numbing the tongue like a blast of Listerine Mouthwash. I finally get some dark malts, nuts and the alcohol comes on again. Its an alright beer but not really my thing and I tire of it after a while. A6 A4 F6 P3 OV13 3.2

On tap @ Boulder Strong Ale Fest poured a dark brownish black with a small brown head. Aromas of dark fruit, spice and honey. Palate was full bodied and dry. Flavors of spices, oak and mild cherry with a dry finish.

22-oz bottle provided via trade with fordest. Pours opaque with a spare light brown completely diminishing head and flat body. Aroma is heavy malt (chocolate, coffee, burnt), light hops (grass), average yeast (dough, leather) with notes of prune, wood, smoke and tar. Full bodied, slick texture, average carbonation and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness.

Bottle (650ml) shared with HogTownHarry, jerc, mabel, mds & tupalev -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with an average size lasting light brown head. Aroma of caramel malt, dark fruit, some roast, chocolate and hops. Flavour’s sweet and follows the aroma: Caramel malt, dark fruit, some roast and hops but has a big boozy and somewhat bitter finish. Medium to full bodied. Very good but it didn’t live up to my expectations -- still, 3.7 is nothing to scoff at.

Thanks to awaisanen for this 2006 bottle. Pours a deep black with a small bubbly/creamy lightly lacing deep tan head. Aroma of sweet toasted/lightly roasted malts, caramel, light alcohol, some almonds and bar cherries. Flavors of caramel, milk chocolate, mixed nuts, some vanilla and woody notes. Nicely done, looking forward to trying the Older. Nice creamy palate.

Bottle. Deep dark brown pour. Nearly no head. Mahogany edges and a nice alcohol coating around the circumference of the glass. Nose is roasted malts, dark chocolate, light licorice, soft alcohol, and dark fruits. Taste is larger licorice and hops notes, dark chocolate, alcohol, roasted malts and rum soaked fruits. Body is medium but slick. Not a lot of carbonation to this at all. However, there is a bit of stickiness and alcohol warmth. Finishes with more bitter hops, licorice, dark fruits, roasted malts and dark chocolate. As I sit here typing and can feel it warming my stomach. It doesn’t taste like it’s high in alcohol but I can feel it. Delicious beer any way you cut it!
