Pretty sweet smelling and malty as well. Very thick taste. Alot of roasted malts, with some bitter chocolate and even a touch of some bourbon in there too. Pretty rich. The mouthfeel is pretty oily. Pretty good beer. Finish is nice and relatively smooth for 10%. iowaherkeye (1858), Los Angeles, California, USA

Pours a dark dark brown--black, really--and a staying two finger creamy beige head. Very pretty. Aroma of coffee beans, a bit of grain, roasted malts, pine, light charred wood--though not necessarily smoky--, oatmeal and cereal. Flavor is very hot and alcoholic up front with alcohol, followed by some char, piney hops, lots of roastiness. Has a vinous quality throughout. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Seems more like this wants to be an imperial stout to me, but not quite. This will need to mellow a long time. Still good though. Crosling (1854), Loveland, Colorado, USA

The last few months I have had several bottles of this beer, and I really enjoy it! Dark brown to black color, very light colored brown froth. The nose is awfully soft and dull. only a very light hint of fruits and perhaps a light hint of chocolate, bourbon and wood. Interesting flavor of very light bourbon and wood, rich malts, dried cocoa, fruits. Very complex. A great brew! CharlesDarwin (1846), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 24, 2006 22 Oz Bottle. Aroma a light waft of distant fresh coffee, dried plums and hints of creamed brandy. Pour of chocolate centered sienna, with orangey glowing fringes and a rim of whitish. Flavor a hybridization of sweet currant malts, heavy cold sweet cream, with a big estery pear, almond and toasted date and walnut bread, with edges of molasses and melted raw sugar. Starts with the dark intro of an imperial stout, but with a full of dark bourbon notes, before hitting balance with an edge of dryness, then falling into a mellow refined fruit of barleywine type character. Nice oaky char, crispy barbeque crust and fading edges of light hop cones bring balance. Expressive all around. Really amazingly delicious with a rich deep sugar content in the malt. Edges of hop bring balance, but acerbic light coffee liquer and candy help too. This is such a unique offering, for walking so many style lines. Regardless, delicious and a top beer! The pour would lead you to believe it was a stout. Thick and dark black with small cherry head that doesn’t stick around. Aroma is mostly alcohol with a little malt. At first sip you notice not much carbonation and a thick chewy feel. The burnt flavor is present throughout with an alcohol burn after swallow. You then realize it is not a stout. Different. Good for a winter night or for melting snow on your driveway. AmEricanbrew (1838), Washington DC, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 19, 2008 Fresh 22oz bottle pours pitch black with a big frothy tan head. Has a WTF smell of grassy, buttery hop pellets and some blackened malts. Full bodied and smooth. Decent taste is blackened malt with a black licorice sweetness. Has a strong alcohol bite to finish. Different best describes this beer. Aged bottles of this are better, a cellared bottle update is in work. 31207 RAYBOY01 (1834), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 2, 2009 Wow.... And that really should be enough said, but...Pours black as the ace of spades, thick and viscous like something out of the crankcase of that beater in your garage that you haven’t started since the Nixon Administration, and floating a huge oily tan head. Nose is sweet darkly roasted barley, dark fruits, touches of a weird tartness, coffee, chocolate, and oak. Thick and syrupy mouthfeel that coats and clings to the tongue, palate, tonsils, teeth, and uvula. Huge burnt flavors, dark grains, brown sugar, molasses, charred oak, chocolate, coffee, and again a touch of tartness, right alongside the substantial hop bitterness in the long lingering finish. Alcohol is ever present, but not overwhelming at all. Kind of a weird brew, stylistically, but really very nicely executed. nearbeer (1834), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Cocoa, caramel, oats and oak on the nose. Chocolate, cherry, coffee and fruity oat on the gulp. Charry smoke, tobacco and roast on the finish. Medium-heavy body is smoothly carbonated and dangerously drinkable, with a roasty dry finish.
