22oz - thanks Foolish_Mortal - Aroma is pungent dark roasted malts, molasses, brown sugar, mocha and alcohol. Pours black with a small head and good lacing. Flavor matches aroma is it’s strength, with the alcohol being a bit stronger. Palate is creamy and sticky. A very tasty can of oil. I would classify it as a Baltic Porter.

Black with a medium sized chocolate head. Aroma of burnt wood, black chocolate, coffee and alcohol. Flavor is rich and thick. Strong sweet roasty malts, coffee, chocolate, oily and smooth. Cloying mouthfeel, can taste and feel the alcohol entering my blood stream.

Hop Rod Rye meets Bell’s Expedition Stout? Great chocolate nose, black pour with a layer of light brown bubbles passing for a head. Taste of coffee, chocolate, rye, dark sweet malts, long bitter grapefruit hops, and an alcohol warmth that cannot be fully hidden by the complexity of the flavors. Good round mouth feel. I admit that I am a sucker for chocolatey hoppy stouts, and this may not be everybody’s favorite.

Thanks to Facto for breaking this one out at the end of the night. Before getting to the last of the brett or barrel aged beers I needed one last thing to prep the palate. This did the job admirably though I am not sure why it is called an American Strong Ale. It seems more like a stout to me, but either way it is an excellent choice.

Aroma / Appearance - The nose reminds me of a sherry with notes of cherry, malt, honey and oak. The pour resulted in a deep black body with clear lacing and almost no head. From the appearance you would not peg this as a strong ale (at least, I wouldn’t).

Flavor / Palate - The flavor is stoutlike - smoky and malty with a sharp aftertaste. If it were an imperial stout it would be on the thin side but for this style it is perfect. The second and third sips added caramel, coffee, yeast and white bread to the other tastes. The aftertaste was so nice I would have savored it for a while if not for the next set of beers being opened.

Thick sweet stout like beer. Hints of chocolate and some coffee. Maybe cherry. Well balanced and tasty.

22oz bottle. Pours black with a thin light brown head. Sweet malty aroma with roasty notes, vanilla and alcohol. Roasted malt flavor with vanilla, chocolate and bourbon with a coffee and hop finish. Holy crap is this good.

Sampled at the 4th Boulder Strong Ale Fest. The beer poured a nearly opaque, dark brown color with a trace, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing head. The aroma was malty with heavy notes of roasted grain, cookie and caramel, moderate notes of toasted nuts, molasses, chocolate and coffee; hoppy with a light note of herbs; yeasty with light notes of cellar; moderate notes of vanilla and moist, lush, fresh banana bread. Nummy! The flavor was heavily bittersweet with a long, moderately sweet, heavily bitter finish. The body was full, the texture was velvety and the carbonation was soft.
