Pours inky black with a very small brown colored head. Aroma is roasted malt, dark fruit,, chocolate and a hint of floral hops. Flavor is caramel malt, dark fruit, some roast, chocolate, smoke, molasses. Palate is massive, full bodied, hardly any carbonation, like motor oil, starts sweet, finishes like bitter-sweet chocolate, luscious, creamy, super smooth!!! This is fantastic stuff, gotta try the older viscosity!! HopheadHans (755), Bay Area, California, USA

Aromas of wood, bourbon, a bit of dark cherry and chocolate. Flavors are quite complex, a bit of tobacco, cherry, plum raosted malts and of course bourbon and oak. However nothing is overpowering, the balance ia quite delicate. Nice mouthfeel, would probably age well. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA

If this isn’t a stout, then I just don’t know what a stout is! Big chocolatey roasty licorice nose smells a lot like Expedition. Perhaps a bit more of anise and chocolate. Less roast. Thicker; smooth, small even bubbles. Big aggressive flavor. Bigger roast. Bigger malt sweetness. Sticky aggressive piney hops. Anise is huge. This is a nasty big beer with long lingering roast. Quite a lovely big beer, in my opinon talon1117 (630), Bellvue, Colorado, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 1, 2009 The pour is coal black with a fairly small, dark tan, pillowy head which is mostly diminishing and leaves minimal lace. Nose is great with plenty of sweet, malt notes; lots of maple syrup, milk chocolate, toasted caramel, vanilla, molasses, light mocha coffee, and undertones of scorched maple, fresh cut oak, and some hints at peat and toasted oats. Flavor is amazing with similar sweet notes of mostly maple, molasses and vanilla but also some toasted caramels, rich chocolate, more lightly scorched maple wood, hints at dark coffee, faint red currant notes (almost fruitcake-like), and just hints at leather, peaty smoke, and more oatmeal tones. Palate is good but not as thick as I would have thought; nearly lively to start but soft to lively throughout, mild warmth, full body, and velvety mouthfeel. I would have thought that the palate would be more round and chewy given the appearance. Finishes with some moderately light bitter notes of scorched maple, peat, and moderately dark coffee with sweet notes of molasses, chocolate, and currant lingering. Way too sweet and malt forward to be a stout or porter but I don’t know what category this would even fit into. One of my favorite flavors in a beer in a long while with so many malt complexities and just enough wood and dark notes to keep from becoming cloying. I have one of these in my cellar and I cannot wait to see what it will become in some time. Truly a unique style from a truly unique brewery. RSRIZZO (1369), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Nov 20, 2008 Aroma is a rich, sweet and roasted. Color is black with mellow carbonation and a thin tight tan head. Taste is unbelievably rich, roasted and complex. It starts with a full body that goes down with a rich and crisp feel. Finish is bold and rich coming on with roasted coffee and dark chocolate then sweet toasted vanilla backed by a dry bitterness. After taste is sweet with burnt notes and a trace of alcohol. This is just a flat out amazing brew and is one of the most complex and rich brews I have had. joebrew (608), Farewell Minny; Hello Puyallup, Washington, USA

Taste is malty with molasses, caramel & dark fruits with a woody background. A sipping brew for sure. I’ve got to ask Why is this not an Impy Stout. ? Very enjoyable!!
