Black coffee and no head whatsoever. Nose... sweet, roasty and booooozy! I feel like Ray Milland from, "The Lost Weekend" just smelling this stuff! Palate... molasses, turbinado, Bourbon, treacle syrup, double espresso and Christmas pudding all rolled into a supple mouthcoating delight! I just gotta find more of this! | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 8, 2009 375ml bottle. Pours a dark, opaque brown capped by a thick and lasting dark khaki head leaving spotty lacing. Aroma is pretty standard for the style... lots of whiskey barrel, charred and slightly astringent malt, green pepper, anise, char... perhaps some bitter chocolate. Minimal hop profile. Boozy and rather simplistic. Palate is rather dry and unforgiving. Dark and slightly astringent roasted malt. Peppery and spicy... but not in a way that I enjoy. The 12% is hidden quite well. Some dark, bitter chocolate, dry wood, dry malt. Vanilla extract, dusty hops. Medium bodied... not nearly as viscous as I’d hoped. Slightly chalky initial mouthfeel with a tannic, boozy finish.
I’ll admit it... I am a HUGE Lost Abbey Fanboy. But this is an extreme disappointment. The beer seems quite out of balance. Everything seems a tad disjointed with nothing coming together that well. Don’t get me wrong... it’s a good beer, just seems slightly messy. ajm (922), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 5, 2009 Bottle from the ever-generous Shyam. Thanks yet again, my man! What I like about this beer is how simple it is - and it really is quite simple, ultimately. Aroma is heavy black licorice, sweet coffee, milk chocolate. Flavors are that and a very sweet woodiness from the barrel - vanilla, cream & sugar. Very thin for a beer of its size. Reminded me a great deal of BCS and along with it is to me the best example of Bourbon Aging I have tasted. GreatLibations (1441), Last Supper, Arizona, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Apr 4, 2009 Excellent pour with superb liquid to froth transformation. The signature de Tomme. Very dark in color with mild aromas. Full nectar with a creamy mouthfeel. Excellent! This is a drier version with a strong Bourbon essence showing throughout. A huge roast component clobber the user up front. Very refined in nature striking a robust balance with all key factors. The finish is long and strong. Beautiful! markwise (1179), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 4, 2009 Thanks retorp for the share. Very enjoyable brew. Pours dark black with a brown head. Nose is coconut, bourbon, roasted malt, ripe dark fruit, spice, cinnamon, and nice amount of depth. Flavor is bourbon, roasted malt, dark fruit, and some tiny licorice bits. Finish is excellent: bourbon, roasted malt, and vanilla- just the flavors that I want to hang around after this monster is done. Very enjoyable. sebletitje (1914), Tampa, Florida, USA
