Bottle Pours out a ink black topped with a tiny brown ring. Aroma was hot of Bourbon and the 12%. Along with plent of dark roast and coffee. Tast was of the Bourbon once again and a nice thick roast. Some oak and vanilla a nice almond joy tast. Maybe a few years to chill.

Bottle at bockyhorsey’s pad. Pours an earthy black color with a faint brown head. Aggressive with bourbon and espresso on the nose. Has a dry mouthfeel, featuring the flavors of semi-sweet cocoa, espresso, vanilla, and port. Finishes hot with a note of rubbing alcohol. Quality.

FoBAB 2008: Aroma is of rich, dark chocolate, and a lot of bourbon in the nose. Flavor is a nice, complex blend of dark malts, chocolate, anise, some vanilla, and oak. A big beer.

(11/15/08) Bottle at Monk’s Cafe in Philadelphia. Opaque black-colored beer with a small bubbly brown head. Powerful aroma of dark chocolate, wood, bourbon, some espresso notes, lots of roasted malt and a bit of fruitiness. Sweet malty flavor with bourbon, chocolate (some chocolate cake), licorice, some raisins and quite a bit of alcohol. Full-bodied.

Bottle (monks) Black in color, good head. Aroma of sugar, alcohol vanilla and raisons. Taste is a sweet but well a balanced beer. Lots of raisons. Not one of those overdone bourbon aged beers. Just a touch of the boubon comes through with a little vanilla as well. I would of never guessed it to be 12 percent... really smooth and easy to drink. Great beer

375ml Bottle 2007 Bottling Received this in a trade with Stoneman78, thanks! Older Viscosity glops out the bottle with the weight of a heavy motor oil. It’s difficult to even get a soft pour as the viscous body gurgles from the neck. Needless to say the body is as black as the ace of spades. The pour produced a minimal beige head of about one finger that fell to a thin cap and fat ring after a few minutes. Each sip leaves some lacing behind that eventually falls back into the body. The nose has a great depth of complexity. The oak barrel aging plays the most significant role with notes of slightly damp oak and hints of vanilla. A touch of bourbon flashes through along with dark chocolate, brown sugar, and cocoa in that order. The bourbon presence grows as this beer warms. I’m not really pulling much else out of the aroma but what is there is very appetizing. It would get a better score if there was more of a beer profile than so much of a bourbon and oak profile. The flavor runs along the lines the aroma suggested. There’s alcohol heat from beginning to end. Now I love a solid alcohol presence in some of my bigger beers but this one is just a little too hot. Dark chocolate, brown sugar, and cocoa all come back in the aroma rising and falling as it works its way through. Again, it’s the bourbon barrel aging that takes this beer over. Bourbon, alcohol spiciness, damp oak, and mild vanilla are the most common denominators of this beer. As it gets close to room temperature it melds slightly better but it’s still a touch too hot. The mouthfeel at first sip seemed a little on the thin side but as this beer warms it allows the body a chance to thicken up and become as viscous as the label suggests. The body is coating and rich with minimal carbonation which lets the body work through at it’s own pace. The heat works its way through my mouth, nose, and down my throat, warming my cheeks on its way. The drinkability is limited by the alcohol presence. This is a very good sipper whether it be an after dinner drink or a cold weather beer this is one to enjoy slowly. It took me over an hour to finish the bottle and it just kept getting better. I had high hopes for this brew and while it delivered on some aspects it fell short on others. There is a little more bourbon character then I’d like but it is very good. I wouldn’t mind having a few more to see if they cool down over time. Serving type: bottle 7/5/08

This dark brown ale poured with a thin tan head and a strong bourbon aroma. There is a smooth and delicious chocolate and vanilla flavor with an anise finish and a warm alcohol trail. This brew is aged to perfection. The taste components are individually identifiable, yet the overall flavor is balanced.

Thanks to goryshkewych for this one. Bottle poured into my snifter produced a small amount of tan head that went to a ring of lace around the glass. The body was a pitch black color, and you can’t see any light thru this one. Aromas’ of roasted malts, bourbon, Hints of vanilla and wood this has a great nose. There is a nice sweetness in the aromas that really help this brew along. This is a real warmer, when you start sipping this big I mean Big bourbon flavor comes at you . You get the wood and vanilla and the alcohol warmth that just permeate your whole mouth. There is also a nice sweetness from the malts that follow at the end of your sip. The mouthfeel is heavy and almost no carbonation in it at all. A good sipper the bottle size was good for me. It was good to the last drop. I was glad I tried it but don’t think I will search it out again because of the price. I will say this RIS is the best of the barrel aged I have tried; you really get the barrel taste to stand out
