Smelled of chocolate, subdued anise, vanilla, bourbon, and a dash of cocoa. Medium to full bodied and slightly sweet. The flavors followed the aromas pretty closely; bourbon, toffee, a hint of anise, and vanilla. Good stuff. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 1, 2008 Bottle, compliments of vAc. Pours a dark coppery brown with an very thin off-white head. The smell is full of sweet butter pecan toffee and thick heavy smoke. Maybe a hint of tobacco layered in with the oak and smokey notes. From the smell I expected a much more powerful or jarring sensation on the palate but the body is extremely smooth and silky, with just the slightest alcohol soak. The flavor bursts with toffee, dark fruit and, of course, a strong oaky bourbon taste. Really a treat. SamGamgee (1434), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 28, 2008 Draught at The Bistro. Black with a scant head. Woody, bourbony and roasted coffe-like aroma, with some fruity background action. Thick and oily, with low carbonation. Primarily tastes of coffee and bourbon, with light vanilla, dried fruit and wood as well. Some burnt sugar/toffee gong on too. Intense. Definitely smoother and more complex than the regular old vis. chicagodri (1041), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Pours a thick dark brown with an tan head. Very thick syrup type body with aroma and flavor of bourbon, chocolate, raisins, and a touch of coffee. Fine stuff. I love Lost Abbey/Port! Pours dark, dark brown out of the bottle and settles in the glass as pitch black with a small tan head. It recedes to a ring quickly leaving spotty lacing.
The nose is massive and smells like the inside of a bourbon barrel. It’s got the oak, vanilla and bourbon throughout with a big dark roasted malt base and even some raisins and chocolate thrown in.
The taste certainly follows from the aroma and has the barrel character from start to finish. There seems to be a bit more dark fruits, raisins and figs, not to mention the roasted coffee and dark chocolate as well. Very complex and with a dry, slightly bitter finish.
The mouthfeel is perfect - super smooth and slick with minimal carbonation leaving a sticky barrel presence in the mouth.
This is about as good an example of barrel-aging as I’ve seen in a while. It’s extremely complementary to the base beer and doesn’t dominate. A great beer.
