Bottle at Lost Abbey RBSG. Last bottle of Tomme’s tasting. Pours a dark brown color with a small tan head. The aroma is strong with whiskey, dark roasted grains and leather. The taste is remarkable; the bourbon whiskey is well balanced by oodles of sticky sweet black licorice, rounding out the sides--coffee and biter chocolate. The mouthfeel was full and creamy. The finish was long and dry with lingering anise. Overall: Another winner. Perhaps this one is not hyped as much as it deserves. I loved it. RE-rate note 08-03-2009. The same as above except that this beer was completely flat. Knocking down my point score from 4.6 to 3.4.

Just a fantastic brew. Improving on the already-excellent Old Viscosity, this is a stronger, thicker version loaded with bourbon and oak and vanilla and that aged-brown-sugar taste, but in a mild way, which makes for, in my opinion, a more drinkable beer. I could drink this all the time!

I finally got my hands on a bottle of this and, Holy Sh*t its good. Pours an opaque dark brown, nearly black. Very viscous, with a 1 cm tall tan head. Dense, low-lying aroma of molasses, leather, bourbon, chocolate, cream, and toasted oatmeal. I will attempt to describe the taste, but I know I will not do it justice. Creamy bitter dark chocolate, with an earthy toasted caramel malt. Notes of vanilla, molasses, tobacco, burnt coffee, and oak. The bourbon comes through near the back and in the finish. It rounds the flavors out perfectly without turning the beer into a boilermaker. Worth every penny of the $20 I paid for it.

Deep brown with a ring of head around the glass. Strong aroma of molasses, sweet malts, and dark fruits. Malty, molasses, deep fruits, chocolate, and milk in the flavor. Thick, sticky, dry, and smooth body. A very fine brew. Best a little warm, I thought.

Pitch black color, off white head. Fairly straight forward for a bourbon barrell beer, with brownies, bourbon, dark chocolate. Not too boozy for its size. A nice beer, but a little over hyped.

Thanks to pepsican for giving me a chance to try this. Poured black, with a little bit of light coming through. No head. Smell was big bourbon, licorice and dark fruit. Taste was fig, dark fruits, raisins, bourbon, with a nice full finish that lasted on the tongue. Wish I had a bottle of old viscocity to compare it with.

Corked bottle. I have been sitting on this for not too long, maybe 6 months. This is a hugely complex and rich beer. The bourbon barrel aging is apparent in the sweetness. The vanilla and molasses flavors are similar to, but much more complex than the younger sibling of old viscosity. As this glass warms up, it becomes even more vibrant and complex. Wow.

375ml from Lost Abbey (Saints or Sinners, whichever it was). It’s got the same motor oil pour as its cousin, though somehow it seems slightly less oleaginous (yes, I have used this adjective in each review - it’s a slept-on word, come on). Fairly lively carbonation, though the head is on the minimal side. You can smell the oaking in there for sure, and it’s thankfully not that cloying, fake-smelling, vanilla crap that so many breweries seem to coast with. There’s something deeply woody, funky, and I’d say earthen about it. And it really nicely complements the molasses, jerky, chocolate flavors going on in this wondrous beer. It’s ever so slightly hot, and the bourbon flavors are a shade too assertive. But it’s a great one, and I hope to try it again sometime.
