Pours a dark dark brownish black with a healthy mocha head. The nose is sweet, strongly oaky, perhaps dominantly. Molasses, a bit of resin, alcohol, some darker anise sort of notes. I can see why it’s not a stout... but it reminds me of a well constructed imperial stout. Full on the tongue, with lower carbonation, but not flat. A bit viscous, oddly. The flavors are in line with the nose. Perhaps a bit more fruity. Raisins. A bit creamy. Definitely that cherry sort of oak, rather than the vanilla bourbon oak character. Sharp. Lingering tannins. If I’m lucky, I’ll rerate this!

Nose is wonderful chocolate and fruit. Taste is incredible! Chocolate, fruit and subtle bourbon. Mouthfeel is medium-thick and dry, with some alcohol warmth. This one has carbonation! Yay! Very complex and very, very nice! rayg1 (445), Ft. Mill, South Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 27, 2009 2009 bottle. This beer pours a deep black with a very slight amount of bubbles, nearly flat but not completely as most people are reporting (perhaps I got lucky) tiny bubbles continued to rise along the edge of my glass through the entire drink but not enough to form any sort of head or ring of carbonation. The aroma was a massive shot of chocolate and vanilla notes with a deep earthy and oak smell. Bourbon is an obvious factor in this beer as well and it’s character shows here. Taste was complex full of dark chocolate with vanilla and a powerful oak and bourbon flavor towards the finish. As the beer warmed the flavors melded and became more mellow and blended, a very nice plus for this beer as it seems only the best of beers mellow and flesh out nicely as the warm and sit. My last 10 or so sips were amazing! Amazing flavors I can only imagine what this would be like if it were fully and properly carbonated.

Tastes like a mix of a 30 year old tawny port and a smoked porter. It works big time. Drink it not like a beer but like a dessert wine. Treat it properly, and it’s a great drink. daniele (1750), Italy

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 1/5 | 17/20 | Dec 24, 2009 Courtesy Secret Santa- thanks man! What a complex and delicious beer...where to begin? The aroma was a huge chocolate/vanilla mix with a heavy oak presence. Pour was a deep dark black with no head or bubbles. Taste was incredibly complex. Dark chocolate with vanilla are strong with the oak and bourbon heavy in the aftertaste. Each sip throughout the whole beer was different. Only downfall to this beer was the fact that it was completely flat. A little carbonation would’ve gone a long way, but the great complex flavor more than made up for it. Aroma is mostly bourbon barrel with underlying malts, prune, raisin, chocolate. Taste is fantastic; cacao, oak, alcohol, roasted malt, bourbon, earth. Overall a very well done bourbon barrel aged beer. Hell yes.
