eaglefan538 (2021), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Mar 9, 2008 Bottle from JohnC. Pour was pitch black-brown, even a little choco colored thin head on the top that fizzled quickly but left behind a nice ring, regenerable with a swirl, active carbonation in the mouthfeel later. The aroma was oaky wood, chocolate, maple, bourbon. The flavor was all of that, some molasses and licorice under there, just a wonderful BA brew, the best one I’ve had in a while, beer was actually there. Mouthfeel had a nice tingle from the carbonation and alcohol, yet this thing was a beer. Man, that finish was outstanding, perfect highlight to the whole experience. Great stuff, and thanks to John for this one! Top 50, no doubt.
masonjer (394), Lansing, Michigan, USA Jul 8, 2008 Thanks to pepsican for giving me a chance to try this. Poured black, with a little bit of light coming through. No head. Smell was big bourbon, licorice and dark fruit. Taste was fig, dark fruits, raisins, bourbon, with a nice full finish that lasted on the tongue. Wish I had a bottle of old viscocity to compare it with. ChazMania (276), Pasadena, California, USA Jun 29, 2008 Corked bottle. I have been sitting on this for not too long, maybe 6 months. This is a hugely complex and rich beer. The bourbon barrel aging is apparent in the sweetness. The vanilla and molasses flavors are similar to, but much more complex than the younger sibling of old viscosity.
As this glass warms up, it becomes even more vibrant and complex.
Wow. JCB (887), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jun 25, 2008 375ml from Lost Abbey (Saints or Sinners, whichever it was). It’s got the same motor oil pour as its cousin, though somehow it seems slightly less oleaginous (yes, I have used this adjective in each review - it’s a slept-on word, come on). Fairly lively carbonation, though the head is on the minimal side. You can smell the oaking in there for sure, and it’s thankfully not that cloying, fake-smelling, vanilla crap that so many breweries seem to coast with. There’s something deeply woody, funky, and I’d say earthen about it. And it really nicely complements the molasses, jerky, chocolate flavors going on in this wondrous beer. It’s ever so slightly hot, and the bourbon flavors are a shade too assertive. But it’s a great one, and I hope to try it again sometime. fishingnet (736), Brandon, Florida, USA Jun 25, 2008 Bottles courtesy Ibrew2or3 and CigarCityBrew. Pours black with a one finger tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of dark fruit, vanilla, oak, macaroons, chocolate, and roasted malt. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium creamy mouthfeel with a mild to moderate amount of bitterness and very smooth alcohol. A damn fine brew made with extra YUM!!! robinvboyer (953), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada Jun 22, 2008 jet black pour, but not as thick as i was expecting, but still quite nice. Not much carbonation, and little to no head. Aroma is loaded with bourbon, and it adds such a wicked vanilla to the aroma. Lots of chocolate, espresso, molasses, raisins, and dark fruit. Flavour is very very smooth, and a tad boozey. Again, loads of bourbon vanilla notes along with more of the same from the aroma. Just an amazing sipper of a beer, i loved it.
