. Désolant! Goldorak (439), Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Caramel and brown sugar aroma, but something was off, fetid even.
My first sip reminded me of the time Barney Gumble said "Hey, someone left Beer in that ashtray!" and proceded to gulp it down. I like smokiness in Beers, but this is beyond, it’s cinders and soot, and just hangs on your upper palate towards the back of your mouth forever. A saving grace on this one was the fact that the embers hid the alcohol nicely. Bad bottle? I hope so.¨
"Thar she brews" it said on the bottle. "Thar, she blows" is what it should have been written down.

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | May 29, 2005 The Lure: Black pepper sprinkled on burnt grapes. Somewhat flat and stale caramel, purporting the possible weakening of flavors already underway.
The Festivities: Drowning in a pile of ashes. Thin-bodied with low carbonation, rather unsettling and promoting this burnt, charred, bitter bread. Cherries and figs diversify the profile, and brown rum reminds that potent alcohol resides within. As predicted by our friend Oakes, this one apparently does not hold very well.
Transcendence: The morning after a forest fire. Oakes (8115), Kowloon, Hong Kong
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 26, 2005 Murky brown with a caramel head. Malty aroma with figs, plums and canned peaches. Sweet, plummy, burnt raisin flavours. Richly malty, but only slightly chewy. A little tart and vinous in the back - don’t bother aging this one as it may be turning in early. drismyhero (815), Tacoma, Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 17, 2005 Great sweet aroma, big sweet grainy flavor hinting towards french bread yeastiness and some dried figs. Great palate too, sweet and sticky with a nice hum of alcohol warmth. Not too unique, but very very solid. zathrus13 (1312), Mount Laurel, New Jersey, USA

Aromas of butterscotch, sweet malt, fruit, and some hops. Not as sweet as the aroma would suggest, with the butterscotch and hops coming thru the most. Very interesting and somewhat different. Sweet caramel butterscotch with a touch of green hoppy pine. Body starts with a nicely balanced caramel sweetness and resiny hop bitterness, finishing semi-dry with hints of tartness. Nice, flavorful and drinkable barleywine. Thanks to TheBeerCellar2 for sharing! goldtwins (4084), Nesconset, New York, USA
