pours black with a red tint, a small khaki head that dissipates quickly, fine lacing.
smell is roasted malt and nuts, cocoa, and a touch of coffee, touch of vanilla.
taste is a bit on the watery side, roasted malts, chocolate flavored italian ice, and not too bitter, touch of coffee, some vanilla. pantani (1900), Salinas, California, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 19, 2007 This porter pours a deep brown amber color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roasty malts and earthy. A medium to lighter bodied porter. Malts are chocolate and roasty. Hops are slightly earthy. A touch bready. Lively carbonation. Somewhat nutty. Kind of a cross between a porter and a nut brown ale. Drinkable. Mouthfeel is perhaps a touch thin. Finish is crisp and clean, a touch chewy. Aftertaste is a slightly bitter and earthy. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Jul 30, 2006 Draft at The Upstage, PT. Comes out deep ebony brown to near black; some decent whitish-gray head. Hugely roasty and chocolatey on the nose and through the mid-palate, but thin and a little over-carbed. Lots of strong examples of the familiar pleasures of porter drinking, but not really a complete job of making a porter, and not really a venture down a new path, either--creatively or accidentally. I can’t complain about this beer, or jump up and down about it.
