Commercial Description:
An ESB is typically hoppier than its cousin, pale ale, and ours is no exception. This recipe is a variation of one of the several prototype versions of Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale that were brewed here in 1994.

Bottle at PilsnerPeter’s Ratebeer Spring Gathering. Deep amber pour. The aroma is nutty and lightly sweet. There is a bit of earthy sweetness with a bit of light spice. Flavour is a little bit watery but there is a nice light sweetness and a bit of bitterness. There is a light astringency, but it’s not bad.

Bottle from rpstevens. Thanks! Pours dark amber/red with very short lived small head. Smell is slightly nutty, a bit fruity, and a bit sweet. Taste is fruity, nutty and malty but has a nice enough balance for the style, I suppose. A bit soft carbonation, but enough that it is suitable. Decent beer overall.

Medium brown pour with hints of red. Medium caramel malt with a hint of pine on the nose. Slight sweetness, light caramel malt, and a nice finishing bitter. Thin and watery with good carbonation.

Bottle at PPRBSG09. Pours a clear brown with a small head. Aroma is rich and malty with some diacetyl. Flavor is sweet and bland--not much going on here really. Not bad, not good, just a boring beer. 6/4/6/3/12 (3.1/5)

I was rooting for this one. Wasn’t a fan though. Metallic bitterness and almost rotten grain taste. Some brown sugar sweetness and not much else.
