Exactly what a great base RIS should be. Nothing that stood out among other characteristics, but it was all there. Roasty, coffee, anise, chocolate, cream. Dark as the night! Very recommended, but not the best in the world. Try Sexual Chocolate or Dark Horizon first. pepsican (885), The Student Ghetto, Iowa, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 5, 2008 Updated: Jul 16, 2009Pitch black with a finger sized tan head. Coffee and licorice dominate the nose. Flavor had strong black licorice, coffee, vanilla, chocolate, and roasted malts. Overall the flavor comes out too burnt, and the coffee is very dull. Nice and creamy mouth feel but has an intense alcoholic burn that takes away from the overall enjoyment of this one. Thanks cole/adam awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 4, 2008 From a 22oz Bottle, 2007 Vintage. Dark black, mostly opaque, viscous pour with some tobacco-rouge
highlights and a thin head of creamy tan. Vanilla nougat, chewy caramel, and a port-like rich raisin fruitiness
greets the nose. Char, coffee, minty hops, and spicy black licorice add further aroma complexity. There’s even a
borderline barrel-like complexity thats immensely satisfying. Medium bodied, creamy carbonation mouthfeel with a
silky texture. Chewy fudge and rich dark chocolate malt flavors coat the palate, highlighted by some nutty almond
brownie and toffee mid-malt layers. Subtle vanilla lingers amongst the coffee and roast. Lots of roast, but no
harsh astringency, just layer upon layer of dark malt goodness. Toward the finish, some grapefruit flavored hop
bitterness starts to emerge, drying up the richness nicely in the final smack. Fantastic imperial stout. Thanks,
Julian! ironchefscott (342), portland, Oregon, USA

I’m giving it a 20 only because the flavor is out of this world!!! Aroma is light chocolate and alcohol, but hardly there. That still does not take anything away from this one. This beer is the best imperial stout I’ve ever had. For overall flavor this is the one I wish I could have as an everyday drinker, a real treat. Taste is chocolate, dark chocolate, coffee, expresso, roasted malt, some smoke, little vanilla on the finish, and hops throughout. I couldn’t ask for anything more in a beer. This is the closest to the Double Bastard yet(my favorite beer). Huge thanks to Matthew and Unclejedi for this beauty. This beer defines what an Imperial stout should taste like. Pour is as black as charcoal with a thin brown head. Aromas of chocolate, alcohol, roasted malt, and coffee. Flavor is nothing like i’ve ever had before. This brew coats your whole mouth and is wonderful. Coffee stands out the most and some chocolate is in the finish. I wish this stuff was on the shelf everyday. Awesome brew, the best I’ve had to date.
