| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 3, 2009 Bomber from batch 2, bottled April 2009 and consumed seven months later. The pour is hazy and dark, showing a deep chestnut to mahogany hue with glints of translucency at the edges when backlit. A foamy, burnt khaki head settles to a thin but lasting layer with a pronounced edge, and leaves a bevy of lacing spots in its wake. The aroma shows a nice balance between sweet dark fruits and toasted, roasty cocoa-caramel and coffee notes. Hints of bready, creamy yeast lend a distinctly Belgian feel. Flavors turn a bit sweeter, showing more like a true, fruity, malty Belgian brune, but with a dash of earthy American hops and some decent cocoa and coffee roast on the back end. Medium-plus in body, with a slightly prickly carbonation and a semi-dry, yeasty finish, the palate suits the brew well. Nothing earth shattering here, but it’s a well made, hybrid Belgian-American brown.

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 28, 2009 Batch #3 Good brown-creamcoloured head, irregular, over deep brown beer with ruby sheen. Dry-ish chocolate cookies aromas, wood, hints at lactic acid; chocolate and coffee coming out more in force once it warms up a bit, carrying the beer away from the initial Oud Bruin impression. Coffee, very roasted to burnt flavours, near porterish. Mild bitterness, bitter chocolate and more wood, felt. Very dry MF, scarce & severe. Aftertaste carries some sweetness. Severe, but finally pretty pleasing beer. A success, even maybe only for the connoisseurs.
Many thanks, Uncle J!

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 10, 2009 22oz bomber bottle from Charles Street Liquors, 10 November 2009. Batch 3, bottled August 2009. Very dark brown colour with a reddish tinge. Generous beige head dissipates. No lacing. Chocolate malt aroma with a distinct Belgian yeasty element (but that could be because I wasn’t pouring too carefully and accidentally dumped all the dregs in at the outset.) Also raisiny fruit and dabs of licorice. Tends to veer around in different directions but I like it. Less going on, but more coherent, on the palate - mostly directed towards fruity malt (raisins again) and powdery chocolate (cocoa powder but not so dry). Hop action is somewhat restrained but I guess I wouldn’t expect too much in that department from this style, although there is a sort of burnt-ish bitterness that lingers into the aftertaste (as does the cocoa-ish chocolate). Smooth, mellow mouthfeel. Not one of my favoured styles but there’s enough going on here to maintain my interest.
