swoopjones (1862), Buffalo, New York, USA Oct 1, 2008 On tap. Another nice hefe. Creamy , cloudy, cloves, bananas. etc etc. Getting tired of desribing hefes lumpsowers (235), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA Sep 30, 2008 Cloudy straw pour, nice head and lacing. Sugary cinnamon hops, somewhat fruity, like banana or raisins. Medium mouthfeel and low sweetish aroma. Nice beer, good with food, liked this one a lot. I drank this as Konig Ludwig Weissbier. xmarcnolanx (789), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Sep 26, 2008 Aroma is sweet, banana, clove, and wheat.
Taste is fizzy, lemon, banana wheat.
Pours with a straw/golden hue, a huge head, and a very nice aroma of clove-centric banana.
The appearance and the aroma are promising, but the taste is over-carbonated, and somewhat jumbled in it’s strange lemony mix of flavors.
Overall, a good beer, but not world-class. JesseM (660), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Sep 25, 2008 On tap at the Castle as Konig Ludwig Weisse. Taps your typical awesome looking Hefe. Aroma is actually a little different. You’ve got your usual banana and a hint of clove, with wheat malt and yeast, but a sort of undertone of Earthiness makes itself known that is interesting to the nose. Flavour is more of the same (but not in the McCain kind of way). Very tasty Hefe, banana, toned down clove, yeasty goodness with less than excessive effervescence, but that weird sort of earthiness makes its presence known very quickly, but it by no means unwelcome. There is really very little to dock point on with this one. Really nice Hefe and I’m glad to have tried it considering I didn’t know it existed. My 400th rating! My 300th was Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen, so maybe this is a new tradition for me, Hefe’s as milestones. A nice treat from the now defunct Wittelsbach Bavarian Dynasty (marketing which appeals to me as the huge history geek I am). michael-pollack (2598), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 19, 2008 330ml Bottle: Sweet, spiced, aroma. Smells of cloves, banana, lemon, yeast, wheat, and bubblegum. Poured dark yellow/straw/flax in color with a large, white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Cloudy. Sparkling. Some particles. Lightly sweet flavor. Tastes of cloves, spices, banana, yeast, bubblegum, malts, and sugar. Light to medium body. Slightly gritty texture. Average carbonation. Yeasty banana finish. theisti (1637), Leawood, Kansas, USA Sep 19, 2008 Sampled as König Ludwig Weissbier. 11.2 oz bottle purchased as part of a mix a six at Lukas Liquors in Kansas City, Missouri. 21 Feb 2009 best before date on label. Pour is hazed golden yellow with a nice 2 inch white head. Sporadic bubbles float to the surface. Very firm head falls slow to reveal nice lacing. Aroma is very faint, not much there at all. A bit of wheat, a bit of spicy yeast. Taste is husky wheat, some grassy coriander and not a whole bunch else. Really not much character here. Palate was on the watery side. There really are not many flaws on this beer, just a bit dull. Not among my favorite Hefes. UnholyBrewing (448), Melbourne(Mulgrave), Australia Sep 14, 2008 ...bottle. Pours a hazy yellowish-orange with a white, frothy minimal head that is lasting with good lacing. Aromas were of some bananna, wheat malt, and maybe a small hint of clove, but not much. Flavors were rather subtle, and not as strong as the typical good weiss. Nice wheat flavor, with hints of yeast and maybe some bread. Smooth mouthfeel with medium\light bodied that goes down well. Finished silky with no real strong aftertaste like a really good hefe, but still worth a try. Just not as flavorful as my favorites, but a decent brew. otakuden (518), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Sep 14, 2008 Pours a gorgeous hazy subdued orange. A good one to two fingered-head graces the top of my glass, eventually fading into a very decent ring and soft film on top of my weissbier. The nose. Ah the nose: bananas, clove, yeast, and some sour bread. Silky smooth with a bit of soft chewiness in the body, a wonderful attribute of the wheat permeating my Ludwig. Mild hints of bananas, spice, and cloves, and sour yeasts lingering in the back are balanced perfectly. A bit of a softer weissbier then others I have had, the overall flavor profile is spot on. I enjoy my weissbiers the most after they have had a few minutes outside the fridge to breath and eek toward room temperature. As I approach the end of my glass, a nicely mild yeast tang hangs with the soft banana and spiced cloves.
It’s hard sometimes to remain unbiased when I just quite simply love the German weissbier style. I am always in the mood for a good German weiss, and Konig Ludwig is right there to meet my need with a smile. It isn’t my favorite weissbier, but it’s milder, more balanced palate would be a good introductory German hefe, and a good session beer for simply whenever.
