Commercial Description:
This is Royal Barvarian Hefeweizen. Why are the Bavarian Royal Family and King Ludwig so important to brewing history? The Bavarian Royal Family had sole rights to brewing Hefe-Weizen on Bavaria for over 200 years. No wonder we are the leading experts on wheat beers!

Rating for König Ludwig Weiss

Poured murky, thick and wheaty with a thin white head. Surprised by the amount of maltiness in the aroma as opposed to the requisite yeast and banana. Instead I found a bit of caramel and breadiness (raw and baked) with some alcohol that invaded the sinuses. Started sweet and full-flavored with a mild, sour fruit ending, rather like plums. Mouthfeel was creamy yet dry while the finish was slightly chalky and astringent. I’m really glad my wife likes a good weiss otherwise I may have missed out on this one.

Clear deep gold, with a nice white head. Aroma is a light maltiness, corn, light yeasty notes. Taste is a light banana, with yeasty notes, light malt.

Cloudy yellow, quickly dissolving fizzy head. Lemon, grassy, rice-like nose. Sweet and yeastily bland taste. Rice again in the taste. Bland Weisse.

Draught, a dark cloudy orange with a large white rocky chead. Wheat yeast and spice (corriander & cloves) in the aroma. Orange and spice in the flavour. Good.

The yellow labels looks not so good. The beer in the glass is fine. But the beer tastes really stale and insipid. I was disappointed. Not a good beer.

Draft at Ballydoyle, as “König Ludwig Royal Bavarian Hefe Weiss” In branded straighter-than-normal hefeweizen glass. Cloudy yellow, a quarter-inch white head that didn’t touch the lemon wedge stuck in the glass. Still started with a bit of Lemon Pledge smell, but this dwindled to a gentle base wheat smell. Taste is soft and just a little spicy. Usual hefe esters are not as strong, just a bit of clove, and no banana bomb, working well with the wheat and malt. Just a basic, average hefeweizen.
