Commercial Description:
This beer was born for greatness. Sent by English brewers via the Baltic Sea to the court of the Czars, Russian Imperial Stout was brewed to very high gravities and allowed to ferment on the long voyage. The result? A dark, strong and bracing brew, imbibed by Peter, adored by Catherine and now reclaimed by you, the People. Za Vas!

12oz bottle NIG thanx to OKBEER. The pour was thick and oily, with out much head. The small brown head sat on a very deep black body. Nose was caramel and roasted malts and coffee and dark fruits, ahhh nice! There is an immense dryness to this, nice amount of carbonation to help carry the flavors around the mouth, and the mouth feel was heavy and full. I have no trace of the 8%, very nice brew, loved it.

Black/darkest brown. Small layer of frothy tan foam. Mild aroma- light roast, light chocolate, light opium-like herbal perfume, and drier dense bread like malt. Flavor is even more mild with the same characters. Medium body, light carbonation. Not enough weight here, tame imperial stout. An interesting herbal perfume is somewhat redeeming, but still not enough going on here. From notes.

341 ml bottle from the brewery, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. At least two years old.

App.: Deep brown-black with a fair light mocha head. Aroma: Strong, thick, oily brown sugar, molasses, licorice, black coffee and dark chocolate, somewhat fruity, lighter milk chocolate as well, lovely. Palate: Medium body, moderate effervescence. Flav.: Still fruity with lots of grape jelly, less of the deep, rich oily malts found in the nose, still a fair amount of licorice, some molasses, less chocolate, a touch vinous and woody; kinda sweet with just enough bitterness, some coffee to finish.

The flavour can’t match the palate, but still very tasty, particularly for its age.

Nearly a gusher. Over carbonation leads to a sizable but large-bubbled cola-looking head that stays around longer than is welcome. Nearly pitch black body. Nose: lactic chocolate milk balls, ash, roast, soft, melted milk chocolate all covered by the small but noticeable scent of isovaleric acid. Medium thickness, some chewiness and sweetness up front, drying considerable over the middle, leaving an ashy and parched finish, uncomfortable and unflavorful. Heavily astringent, excessively roasty and sulfuric in the same way that charcoal and a recently extinguished match turn the nose. Not good.

Bottle- A deep black letting no light through, with a frothy mocha head that leaves good lace. Nose of roasty coffee, toasted malts, some dark chocolate, cocoa powder, like sweet coffee with khalua added. tastes weak in comparison to aroma. Coffee and dark chocolate, sweet cocoa, but that is about it. No real hint of the ABV, which is nice, but the body gets thin, and is taken over by sweet roast flavours. Creamy, if a bit thin in the finish. Good.

Bottle thanks to OKbeer. Pour is black with meium brown head. Only slivers of brown visible at perimeter. Aroma is roasted malt, brown sugar, milk chocolate, hints of coffee, distant hops, and tobacco. Aroma is very creamy and mellow. Flavor is roasted malt up front with notes of coffee, chocolate, and brown sugar. Not as sweet and rich as I was anticipating. Light smokiness and tobacco also detectable. Finish is long and bitter with a distant hop flavor and some coffee-like aftertastes. Probably not the best beer to drink on a day when the heat index was 103, but it’s light enough and the alcohol is hidden enough that it was still enjoyable.

Liquid Sunshine V. 12-oz., capped and foiled. Thanks so much, Explosivebeer--what an awesome surprise! Pours jet black. Very faint rubied highlights. Headless and laceless. Big chocolate and roast on the nose. Creamy medium body. Chocolate, roast, dark fruits, and a bit of black bread on the mid-palate. Mild chocolatey finish.
