Commercial Description:
Henry Calcutt, an Irishman, started Calcutt Brewery in the early 1860’s here in Peterborough. The brewery closed as a result of prohibition in the 1920’s. Henry is six feet under in Little Lake Cemetery beside the banks of the Otonabee River. Thought that it would be nice to name a beer after him.

Volo cask days 2009. This brewer has competent material. Here os a lower IBU ale that is a very drinkable cask. Medium brown colour, a bold taste with a bit of citrus and a little acidic in the finish. This would go well with food.

Cask at ’Volo Cask Days 2009’. Pours a deep amber-red with a small bubbly off-white head. Aroma, which is quite mild, of caramel malt and light grassy hops. Dull flavour of grain, caramel malt and light grassy hops. Average bodied. A dull, mediocre beer.

Cask. At Volo Cask Days 2009. Cloudy deep red with an average lasting frothy off-white head. Grassy and lightly roasty aroma, with crush appleseed bitterness - same in the flavour, only grainier ... average body, slightly bitter finish - pretty non-memorable.

Deep amber brown, long lasting tan head, good lacing. Aroma is quite malty, some chocolate, coffee beans, roasty. Flavour is quite robust, caramel malt sweetness, some chocolate, moderate bitterness. Sweet mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finished medium length, chocolate and caramel continue.

Bigger than expected, good balance. Enjoyable.

Growler from the brewpub.
Opened on January 9, 2009.
Very fresh sample.

Volo Cask Days 2009. Some great sweet malts in the aroma and flavor. A simple session ale, with lots of flavor.

Tap @ Volo
Appearance: amber looking brew , light fine haze , light , bright top noted as well.
Nose: earthy base with malty top. Hint of aromatic hop. Good aroma per se but I failed to note Irish character.
Flavor/Palate : Medium bodied with mild centre. Slightly thinner on sides. Some raw bitterness , leafy and citric. In character more to pale ale than malty caramel Irish one. Bah! 12-/20

Candied malt aroma, hint of chocolate, auburn, small tan head. Flavour has lots of malt, followed by a decent level of fruitiness, mild chocolate notes. Light bodied, yet very well balanced, quite a pleasant mouthfeel, nice bitterness. Great offering.

Growler - Red Brown Ale , no head and low carbonation, dark toffee aroma, serving up loads of dry roast malt, sharp finish
