Commercial Description:
This big IPA is aged 30 days in oak barrels. This pale amber beer features hops everywhere, with an earthy hop aroma that becomes increasingly fruity as it progresses through the palate. The oak takes the sting out of the hops, leaving a mellow, aromatic palate with a sturdy malt backbone leading to a dry and quite bitter finish. This is a superb sipping beer.

Sampled a pint of this one on draught at the brewpub in Portland, OR. This particualr version was aged in chardonay wine barrels. This beer pours to a slightly hazy, deep golden color, with a thick, creamy, head, and a soft to moderate carbonation. The nose on this beer is very interesting, with aromas of pine and citrus hops paried with aromas of oak, and vinous wine notes. The palate is firm, with good pale and sweet matly flavors, paired with a slightly sour/vinous and oaky flavor as well. This beer finishes with more good pale and sweet malt up front, then ends with some tangy/critus hop bitterness, followed my more oaky/vinous flavor that lingers. You really pick up a lot of aromas and flavors from the chardonay barrel in this beer. I enjoyed it very much, but hop heads might feel it detracts from the hop character, which is present, but has to fight for attention. One of those beer you will either love or hate. This one would make a nice aperitif, and a nice beer to relax with.

Nitro tap at brewery. Light to medium amber colored witha very long lived off-white head. Sheets of lacing are left behind. Aroma is hoppy, citric but seemingly a touch muted, just not very bright or crisp in nature. Medium bodied to light. Bodest carbonation. Slight tannic flavor. A touch of sour? Decent beer, I would like to try this on a regular tap.

This was way too light, soapy and almost wine like in character, just glanced right over my palate, with an over abundance of vanilla. The color is a light gold, with an herbal hoppy nose, and of course some woody notes from the oak. I would be curious to find out what kind of oak they used and the region it comes from, what it was used for before the beer.

A copper color with a decent head that has now diminished. The aroma is hoppy with some fruitiness. The flavor is malty with nice hop and bitterness in the back. It is a bit astringent. I did enjoy this much better when I had it at the brewery after it had aged some than at the OBF.

I had this at the brewery, not at the OBF 2003. Starts simple with a very small head and a normal amber color. Taste doesn't really strike you untill you swallow. Then a hop burst accelerates through your mouth, filling it with presumably Cascade hops. Great bitter aftertaste. Raccoon Lodge's best offering.
