Commercial Description:
During a fierce storm on his voyage across the ocean, William Rahr could be heard yelling from the tall masted ship: "Roll on old sea! And when you are done, when the storm clouds have destroyed themselves, we will still be standing and drinking!" Today, we have created the ultimate ale for a voyage such as this: A German-Style IPA - a traditional India Pale Ale with German Influence. Our German-Style IPA is brewed with a blend of all German malts, hops, and yeast. It has a rich maltiness with both floral and spicy hop characteristics. So get ready and hang on - Stormcloud will see you through your roughest seas and straight on to smooth sailing. Editor’s Note: This beer was reconfigured in 2009 with new hops and yeast.

12 oz bottle, courtesy of Soonah. Pours golden yellow with slight white head and a lot of speckledy gray floaties. The aroma is malty in a way I don’t quite expect from a typical IPA (the all-German ingredients explains this), with lots of lemonbread, and a strange yeasty note. The flavor is lemon and muffins with a good dose of herbal tea. Very weird. The finish is quite bitter, but the herbal tea characteristics really hang on. I’m not sure how I feel about this one.

Bottled. A hazy golden beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet spicy combined with notes of elderberries. The flavor is sweet with notes of elderberries, leading to a dry bitter and fruity finish. The body is thin. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Shared with Bman1113vr. Gold with virtually no head. Aroma was light floral hops, and a sugary smelling sweetness. Very little taste, hints of hops with a fizzy mouthfeel. Bland.

2009 bottle. I am not sure who uploaded this, but I am not sure it deserves it’s own rating. Pours with a particle abundant yellow body with no head. Aroma of apples, German hops, and a noticeable, crisp element. Taste is a bit astringent with soggy and sour malts, a bit of German hops and associated bitterness. Tastes as though it has been lagered. No where near enough hoppiness for an IPA (I would be shocked if this was above 30IBU). Fizzy and dry mouthfeel.

Not an IPA in my opinion, just swill. Pours with a large, rocky, white head with a deep yellow body. Hay and maybe some spicey yeast in the aroma (lack of hops, especially for an IPA). Tastes like a watery pale lager with a dash of hop bitterness. Pretty crappy for an IPA. Fizzy mouthfeel.

Golden in color with a very small white head. Below average carbonation. Very thin with a clean taste. Did not come across as an IPA. What is a German style IPA? If this is it, I’ll stick to "regular" IPAs.

12oz twist-off bottle. Hazy golden orange, tall off-white head of foam. Nice citrus hop, some straw, and a bit of caramel. Bready malt flavor. Very dry. Spicy and finishes with a nice linering hop character. Medium bodied. very tasty and full flavored. nice hop bite.

12oz bottle. Brew pours medium gold, mostly clear with a fizzy white head that dissipated quickly. Some lemon zest and other citrus notes. Flavor held some spice and hop bitterness, finish was quick and somewhat astringent.

Not a bad IPA. It doesn’t bowl me over with hops, which I appreciate. Some don’t care for that but I really like it. A much more subtle approach to an IPA.
