Commercial Description:
Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Pours a dark brown (almost black) color with a thin tan head after an aggressive pour. Boring burnt grain with a hint of apple. Flavor is slightly unpleasant with a more burnt malty flavors and a metallic finish. I was warned by my brother that this stuff was "just ok" and it ended up being worse. I guess Mel Gibson really is anti-semetic.

Ruby-brown color with a small tan head. Deep aromas of roasted coffee and earthy malts. Thin and sweet with a slightly bitter chocolate flavor that leads to a sharp finish. Not bad, just seems like it’s missing something.

Another brew from Walt. This poured dark brown, clear with a just a small bit of head. I thought this was more like a brown ale as it was no where near a black lager very little flavor and what was there was caramel

No head, still deep dark brown body. Chewy raisens and maple in the nose, with some smoked maple wood scents. Kind of flat tasting, pale, light, almost flavorless. Bland cardboard undertones of some mild, rubbery smoked malt flavors.

12 oz bottle: Poured brown with a small beige head. Mild coffee aroma with slight chocolate. Flavor includes lightly roasted malt, a touch of coffee and mild hoppiness. Drinkable.

Dark copper body, lush, white head. The aroma is slightly yeasty and slightly full of minerals, like it comes from a can. The flavor is quite, quite thin - not much going on at all. Very slightly malty, with hints of smokiness... it’s not unpleasant, just not much at all.

Not much going on here - kind of tastes like roasted nut submerged in a glass of water - quite drinkable, but so is bud light - rather uninteresting.

Bottle: Dark brown, heavy tones of ruby, thin sudsy off-white head, little lacing.   Roasted oatmeal nose, minor graininess.   A wee bit of burnt malt flavor, and I mean a wee bit.   Otherwise its hardly a blip on the radar when it comes to flavor.   Feels like water going down actually.   One of THEE lightest Schwarzbiers I have had.   Unimpressed.   Seems totally watered down.   Interesting label tho.   Thanks Tad!
