Commercial Description:
Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a quickly receding head. Strong roasted malts aroma, with coffee and burnt caramel. Heavily roasted malts on the taste, with dirt, earth and coffee as well.

Reviewed 3/13/2009 (Bottle): Pours a dark brown black color body, with a tannish, creamy looking head, okay sized and somewhat lasting. Dark roasty malty aroma, some coffee. A little skunkiness. Some fruitiness too. Enticing. Creamy mouthfeel, light fruitiness, like a hefe, some banana. Not as stouty as I was expecting. Very tasty.

Pours dark brown. Aroma is nutty, smokey and malty. Flavor is smokey and malty with a slight tartness, like cherries.

Had a slight aftertaste which disagreed with me. Other than that, fairly solid. Tried it both bottled, and on tap at the Brewery, and it was obviously MUCH better at the Brewery.

Look and smell of dark beer, but drinks like a lighter beer. Good entry beer for acquiring dark beer taste. Gets better as you drink more. Definite malt overtones yield to a slight caramel flavor at the back of the throat.

Bottle, courtesy of Rollinhard. Very dark brown, almost black pour. Medium white head that dissipated completely. Aroma of roasted malt; toasty and biscuity. Similar flavor with notes of coffee and chocolate.

Sampled from 12-oz bottle, shared by moelikebeer. Pours a semi-clear dark brown brew with a thin and creamy off-white head that slowly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of toasted dark and black malts, a hint of coffee and dark pitted fruits. Taste is medium bodied with flavors of dark malt, some toasted bread crust, flowery hops and a touch of coffee. Finish is semi-dry with a toasted dark malt and some light caramel.
