Pours a semi-clear dark brown brew with a thin and creamy off-white head that slowly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of toasted dark and black malts, a hint of coffee and dark pitted fruits. Taste is medium bodied with flavors of dark malt, some toasted bread crust, flowery hops and a touch of coffee. Finish is semi-dry with a toasted dark malt and some light caramel. blutt59 (2184), Dallas, Texas, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 31, 2008 Pours a dark black with thin frothy light tan head. The nose is roasty, grainy, chocolate grain, slightly sweet, coffee. The flavor is a tad thin, roasty, not as big as the nose, coffee, a little sweet, some hop bite. The palate could be a bit bigger, seems kind of washed out at the end. Still pretty good for a black lager. Aurelius (2655), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 26, 2008 Roasty, earthy chocolate flavor. Moderately sweet. Malty choco-roast aroma that is a mirror of the flavor profile. A little on the thickish side, medium bittering. Great label. Some complexity, and it definitely had more character than Shiner Schwarz that I had in a back-to-back comparison. Respectable. gringo332 (247), Richardson, Texas, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 25, 2008 Coffee flavor. I enjoyed this beer as well as the story behind the name. Pours a deep dark black with hardly any light getting through. Creamy tan head with spotty lacing. Nose is roasted coffee, cocoa and some smoke. Tastes a lot like it smells with a mild hop finish. xShanex (47), Mansfield, Texas, USA

I do admit that it is a bit watery. Tastes of wood and smoke were not too appealing. Could not finish the glass. Have another? No thanks...
