Commercial Description:
Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

12oz bottle. Decent roasted coffee aroma. Black body with tan head. Medium sweet caramel to flavor but the carbination cola present takes away the roasty flavors. If this had more body to flavor it would be a real good one.

Pours a dark but translucent chestnut brown color with a small, fleeting, cream colored head. Minimal spotting marks the glass. Aromas include watered down coffee, dry cocoa, faint woodsy notes, and traces of earthy hops. Flavors are weak and muddled, with diluted, roasted coffee and chocolate notes showing alongside wimpy earthy hops. Balanced, sure, but just lacking in substance across the board. Thin, watery mouthfeel with low carbonation. This simply isn’t good at all.

The beer pours a clear dark amber with an thin off white head that heads for the hills very quickly. The nose is a combination of sweet roasted malts. The mouth feel is thin a watery. The beer is very underwhelming

Smelled the roasted barley and some hints of chocolate when I opened it. Poured a nice dark brown but with not much head on it. The taste was roasty with a hint of chocolate but did seam a bit wimpy or watery with no kick. It advertises to be a regular brew but after about 10 of them I would expect a little something. I could drink these all day and don’t think I would even get a slight buzz.

Light brown head that fizzes away quickly. Dark brown body left underneath with zero lacing. Weak coffee malts in the aroma. Taste is salty, light coffee malts and very watery.

Pours very dark (almost black) with a thin tan head. Aroma is of roasted barley and copius amounts of sweet malt. The roasted flavor comes out in the taste. The body of the brew is a bit thin for such a dark beer. I would like to pair this brew with grilled chicken that was marinated in soy sauce and a bit of balsamic vinegar. I think the flavors would compliment each other very well. Put some sliced heirloom tomatoes with smoked mozzarella on the side, and you’re cookin’.

A dark clear brown pour. Almost opaque yet not cloudy. Nice appearance. Has a huge 3 inch light brown head, very thick and frothy. Aroma has heavy roasted malt and a hint of chocolate. Flavor is of very dark roasted malt, it’s pretty smooth though. The malt is near burnt tasting. Hey, you either like schwarzbiers, or you don’t. I didn’t at first, but they get better the more of ’em you try. This one’s pretty damn good really. Nice clean palate, little caramel. Smooth drinkability and smooth finish.

I didn’t care for this beer at all. It tasted flat, watery, dry, bitter, and really no good qualities to it, other than being brewed in nearby Ft. Worth. I love Swarzbiers, but if you are new to them, don’t drink this. It will kill your drive to want to try other schwarzbiers, while at the same time killing your palate. Ugly Pug is a very appropriate name for this ugly beer.
