Commercial Description:
Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Brewery Tour Dark reddish color, very nice. Small dissipating head. Malty flavor with chocolate and vanilla. Dry finish, overall good but a bit of a letdown. I was expecting more out of ’Ugly Pug’ and the cute little story that accompanied it!

April 2006 - Just ok. Beer poured dark, little head or lacing. Flavor was dark and roasty, but just thin and not that flavorful. Not even close to as good as Sam Adams Black Lager...and when you can’t even hold a candle to a Sam Adams example of a style (even if it is good in this case), that’s never good.

This is an odd one. Thanks to fly for it. My brother, a non beer geek, hated the sample I gave him, and I can see from the scores on this that there is a wide variability. I found it to be enjoyable. Not a technical masterpiece by any means, but a dark blackish ruby beer with dark malt, some red winey fruit, and chocolate in the nose, a decent body, and pleasant flavors of dark malt intermingled with a rather sizable chocolate syrupy flavor and some figgy finishing notes.

Dark ruby color. Thin coffee nose. Guinness color head that vanishes. Very creamy with a taste of nuts and malts. Makes me think of a lighter thin Guinness almost. Not a bad beer at all, quite enjoyable for a brewery in my backyard! I could make a night of this beer!

Look and smell of dark beer, but drinks like a lighter beer. Good entry beer for aquiring dark beer taste. Gets better as you drink more. Definite malt overtones yeild to a slight caremel flavor at the back of the throat.

Pours clear black with orange/red hue’s, tan head. Aroma of some dark roast. Flavor has a simple dark roast and chocolate notes with a very slight bitter. Mouthfeel is light, somewhat watery, high carbonation. Overall, I am a sucker for this beer, makes a nice session drinker.....I prefer this over a Shiner black lager....

12 oz bottle. Pours a deep rich dark brown almost black with a very thin foamy light beige head. Aroma is tons of nuts and some roast with some dark chocolate- dough and yeast as well. Light char flaovr, with some burtn malts, acrid black malts, and lots of toast and nuts. Dry crackery finish. Not quite refined- seems a bit dirty and yeasty.
