Commercial Description:
Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

12 oz bottle. Pours a deep rich dark brown almost black with a very thin foamy light beige head. Aroma is tons of nuts and some roast with some dark chocolate- dough and yeast as well. Light char flaovr, with some burtn malts, acrid black malts, and lots of toast and nuts. Dry crackery finish. Not quite refined- seems a bit dirty and yeasty.

Pours black into the glass with a small white head. Aroma is of two day old coffee grounds. Taste is okay, some coffee like notes to it, but is overall just mediocre.

This was not a good beer at all. It seemed overly dark and bitter without a good malty taste to back it up.

This beer was puggin’ awful. Dark brown. Thin head. Scent of smoke and brown sugar. Flavour wasn’t vinegar but sour, thin and awful.

12oz bottle-A dark brown lite black body with a nice tan head. Aroma of dark roasted malt and coffee. Taste of the same with a coffee aftertaste. A better tasting black beer.

Pours a deep ruby-brown with a brown head that dissipated quickly. Aroma of roasted coffee beans... like walking through that part of the grocery store where they have the things of coffee beans for you to put in the bags yourself. Anyway... a thinner feeling beer than it looked... tastes much like its aroma. Finishes smoothly with a slight coffee aftertaste. 12 oz. bottle

Terrible beer. Another complete mess from rahr. Smells sour and roasted and funky. Tastes like straight bitter coffee beans and bread. Horribly balanced poured the rest down the sink.

12oz bottle acquired in trade with bu11zeye (thanks!). Poured a deeper reddish brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of roasted vegetables (reminded me of broccoli that was left on way too long), chcoloate, and light coffee. Tastes of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, and light coffee.
