Commercial Description:
Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Pours dark amber in the light, black otherwise. Roasty aroma. Too roasty for style. Tastes...way to roasty for the style. This is a porter. I wouldn’t say hard to drink...but it ain’t too good. Texas beer sucks again.

Pour was cola-like. The head was almost two fingers of off-white foam that collapsed upon itself almost instantly leaving no lacing. The aroma was not pleasant. Reminded me of rotting vegetables. Got more tolerable as it opened up and I noted a bit of spice (cinnamon?) and some malt. The flavor wasn’t quite as bad as the aroma, but I did at one point think I was drinking dirty ashtray water. Decent finish, active carbonation and watery mouthfeel.

Draft at the Flying Saucer in Ft. Worth. Dark brown/ reddish pour with short head. Aroma of malts and toffee. Flavor was malty, caramel, sweet. Dry finish, thin body.

12oz bottle via trade with legion242 - Thanks! - Pours dark brown with a short offwhite head. Aromas of slight chocolate, caramel, and maybe a little coffee. Flavor is caramel, chocolate, and a little roasted malt. Just a touch of coffee as well. Palate it rather thin and basically kills this brew in my opinon. I’ll take a sam adams black over this one anyday!

Draught at the brewery
Hazy dark brown color. Light aroma of roasted malt and wet cardboard. The flavor is weak, with the same mix.

this is just a run of the mill black bastard.... looks like tame coca-cola...weak smell of nothing...nothing offensive but you have to have something there in the first place...

Draft. Lack-luster Schwarbier. Similar to Kostritzer but lacking in flavor. Thought I tasted coffee throughout. Vanishing head with little aroma.

I tried this beer hoping for a good local brew...unfortunately, I was kinda let down. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t terrible beer, but it certainly didn’t meet my expectations as to what a good stout should taste like. It was lacking in the general flavor category, and the aroma left some to be desired.
