Commercial Description:
Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Draught at the brewery
Hazy dark brown color. Light aroma of roasted malt and wet cardboard. The flavor is weak, with the same mix.

12oz bottle acquired in trade with bu11zeye (thanks!). Poured a deeper reddish brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of roasted vegetables (reminded me of broccoli that was left on way too long), chcoloate, and light coffee. Tastes of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, and light coffee.

(Draft at brewery) Pours a medium brown body with a large rocky beige head. Malty aroma. Flavor of malt, roastiness, and nuts.

Bottle courtesy of Walt. Pours a nice mahogany dark amber color with an appetizing rocky, pillowy light tan head. Earthy grainy and semisweet dark crystal malty aroma has a touch of German lager yeast. Starts very thin and watery with mild caramel sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Finishes with some lingering roasted malt. This needs about 50% more malt in it to give it the nice sweetness I enjoy in a schwarzbier. Just too thin and watered down, otherwise not bad.

Pours dark brown with a thin ring of white bubbles. Smells of coffee and dust. Taste is a weird combination of coffee and over the top lemons. Not balanced at all.

No head, still deep dark brown body. Chewy raisens and maple in the nose, with some smoked maple wood scents. Kind of flat tasting, pale, light, almost flavorless. Bland cardboard undertones of some mild, rubbery smoked malt flavors.
