Commercial Description:
Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

The color was dark brown/black. The head was thin, creamy, and off-white. The aroma was coffee, chocolate, and spice. The flavor was smoke, meat, and spice. The palate was lightly carbonated. The finish was roasty.

Bottle courtesy Rollinhard. Pours slightly thin, very black with little head. Nice roasted grain, coffee aroma. Light body, some roasted grain, coffee with a nice dry roasted finish. Decent brew and would be good as a dark alternative in a warm climate.

Bottle: Clear dark brown color with a very thin head, almost no carbonation. Nose of nutty light roast, some husk and bread. Thin flavor with more nutty malts and husk. Tame body and a tinge of sassafras in the tail. Thin body but the roast is about right.

Bottle ( 12oz ). Shared by garthicus with me and blankboy. Dark brick red with a small frothy (everything’s frothy lately!) off-white head. Burnt roast grain aroma, unpleasantly vegetal and dry ... slightly smokey. Taste is mild and dry, sweet roast up-front but a dry sourness lurking ... not too good. Watery, still, with a stale, papery aftertaste. Not great.

Thanks to Blutt59. Appearance: Cola black/brown with a small dirty brown head. Aroma: Umm like someone ate a heap of malt and farted into the bottle! Sour. Malt, vinegar. Flavour: Thin, wet cardboard, grass, malt.

Deep brown of color with a beige head. An aroma of sweet liqurice and weak roasted malt. A flavor of roasted malt and weak bitter notes.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Tart, roasted malt aroma. Slight notes of liquorice allsorts- Okay, but the tartness ruins it a bit. Flavour is dusty, tart and roasted and with cereal notes. A bit cloying. Finish is rather the same, but feels a bit watery. Too much carbonation. The tartness is a massive minus in this beer. 26-09-09.

Bottle Pours a nice black with a thin at best off white head. The head leaves quickly, leaves decent rings of lacing. The aroma is well mixed with a roast coffee to it, although there is hints of hops with it. Has a light carbonation. The flavor is good. Has just enough heaviness to make it stand up. Has a light body and a syrupy texture. The finish is good and a mild aftertaste.
