Cinnamon and malt aroma. Tastes of caramel, malts, a little sweetness, and a hint of alcohol. Thick feel with a lasting aftertaste. TChrome (1303), Bedford, Texas, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 22, 2006 Beer pours an attractive mahogeny color with a dark beige colored head that is mostly diminishing. Aroma is nice and rich with significant malt notes, mostly along the smokey and chocolate also a bit of spices. Flavor is nice and full with roasted nuts, chocolate and a very subtle but well done hoppy/spicey finish. No hint of the 8% ABV. Palate is full and rounded, no thin beer here. I agree with everyone else, Rahr’s best to date. My only suggestion is that this might be best classed as an Old Ale? What do ya’ll think? Lumpy (1802), Carrollton, Texas, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 28, 2006 Bottle. Chestnut brown body with a half inch foamy head. Nose-dusty and vegetal. Taste-almond, roasty malts, medium bitter, a staleness that is very nice tasting, light cola, apple, unsweet orange, slight lactic without the usual associated sourness, medium fruity esters. A world class beer that is delicious. unixweb (237), Sherman, Texas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 29, 2006 I had no idea what to expect from this brew, but I was pleasantly surprised! It pours dark brown with a little red throw in for good measure. The aroma is sweet, somewhat candy-like but clean and malty. Not a lot of head in the glass, mostly just a ton of carbonated fizz. The taste is sweet, a little bitter, with hints of ripe apple. The finish is nice, clean, and spicy! I can’t complain about this one at all, it’s very good! I like this MUCH better than most of the so-called winter ales I’ve tried, and I’m only sorry I bought just one bottle!! RollinHard (761), Fort Worth, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 6, 2006 Pours a dark garnet red, with a decent sized, but quickly dissipating head. Aroma is subtle, but there’s quite a lot going on: caramel, toffee, some biscuit/butterscotch, light milk chocolate, even some mild plum. taste is mildly chocolate, leading to a tangy raisin taste, and again something buttery. Gentle roasted nuts in the finish (innuendos aside). Not much of a hop presence. Mouthfeel was a bit thin, but it seems like it was done out of intention, rather than failing to make it thick. All the flavors were pretty mild and well blended. This beer was incredibly easy drinking and I was astonished to find out it was 8%. Very well hidden. This is probably the most session-friendly winter beer I’ve tasted that didn’t half-ass the quality. Kudos to Rahr. legion242 (1587), Richardson, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 21, 2006 Probably better then my numbers reflect, but I just could not add it up any other way/ BTW, I listed this as an ASA, but if someone else can come up with something more fitting, please feel free to change. Very thin head with some good lace. Brilliant garnet color with a crisp tongue feeling. Good burnt malt, but not over done like B-ridge. In other words, nicely balanced. bhensonb (4374), Woodland, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 16, 2009 Bottle from ericandersnavy. The white tape guy! Thanks a bunch. Pours damn near opaque brown with a foamy 4-finger beige head. Whoa - aroma of dark malt and cinnamon sticks (we just got a bunch of those). Medium plus body with frothy carbonation. Flavor is dark malt, astringent cinnamon bark thing, coffee, maybe chocolate. Yeh, I think chocolate. The head is clinging all over the tulip glass. I’ll also buy nutty. But muted nutty. Finishes dry, but some malt sweet insists on hanging around. Then everything goes creamy. Creamed coffee aspects. Enjoying the heck out of this. Merry Xmas guys. I’m with Fratto on this one.
