Commercial Description:
“Floor-malted” Maris Otter malt, imported from England, is the base upon which six other malts are added to provide the complex richly malty flavor and body to this brew. (One of these malts, brown malt, is a malt style that had been on the brink of extinction.) This recipe is based on a popular English recipe from the 1850s, but it’s been updated for modern ingredients and palates. Only English East Kent Goldings and Fuggles hops are generously used.

It looks like a nice porter with tiny bubbles on the frothy head. It smells wonderful - brown sugar and molasses and even ginger. It just tastes like creamy chocolate milk. The carbonation becomes thin in the finish. Roasty and semi-sweet, like a good chocolate should be. Mmmm...A great porter indeed.

Tap at the brewery. Dark brown, clear, tan head. Nice roasty aroma. Big malty flavors that linger. Real nice and chewy. Big improvement and I would recomend this one for sure.

Tap at the brewpub. Close but no cigar. Pours dark brown with no head. Aroma fist strikes you as cigarette ashes, Underneath is some pleasant roastyness, but it is hard to get passes the cigarettes. The flavor is similar. That ash-tray flavor is up front, followed by carmel-roasty-malty flavor that is halfway decent. I want some head! 5-3-6-4-12

Had this out of the bottle. Poured deep black with a tan head. mid -level and lasting. Aroma of raosted malts and candy toffee and caramel. taste was of a chocolate and caramel, toffee dryness that was pleasant and had good body fill. this was good, and i will have another.

Brewtopia ’04: Brown with a small off-white head. Chocolate nose with some dark fruits. Full bodied with lively carbonation. Starst and ends lightly sweet with a fruity ending.

12 oz bottle via trade with Lou18. Although the label says to enjoy within 120 days, there is no date to gauge that by. Clear deep brown pour with a tiny wisp of a head. Big coffee aroma as soon as I popped the cap! Nose settles in a bit after it has a chance to breathe, with bitter chocolate and roasty malts commingling with the coffee aromas. Some sweet maple syrup notes are present, as well as a vinous aroma. Flavor follows suit, with a touch of smokiness and light bitterness. Body is smooth and lightly oily. Finish is dry, and relatively clean, some roasted flavors hanging around. Really an interesting porter! Thanks Lou!

Has a strong aroma that could be smelt as soon as I opened the bottle. The head dissapates very quickly leaving behind a dark chocolatey beer. Sweet smelling, has a chocolate finish. Smooth and light. I’ll drink it again.

I do like a good porter! And this one has quite a lot going on in it. It looks like a porter and pretty much smells like one (although this one has a more muted aroma than many). The flavor is rich malts with coffee and chocolate and in the mouth the feel is very creamy and smooth. The beginning of the glass is mostly sweet malt but the middle brings some tartness giving a nice balance. Lots of roasted flavors can be found and even some maple. This is a really good porter with plenty of character.

(brewtopia04) Creamy beige head atop clear mahogany body. Aroma is medium sweet, coffee, roasty, some chocolate. Taste is medium sweet, coffee, some chocolate, and grapefruit that serves as good balance. Medium body, bit of acidity.
