Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
As both Paul and Graham are rail enthusiasts the beer is named after the firebox in a steam engine. A reddish deep brown coloured beer which is a deceptively drinkable strong bitter with a fine combination of citrus hops and cherry fruit bittersweet flavours which gives a strong dry bitter finish.
Pale malt, chocolate malt; Progress and Target hops.

Medium fine-laced offwhite lasting head. Deep yellow body, slightly cloudy, with light carbonation. Light fruity, malty aroma with balanced soft resiny hops. Deep sweet fruity malty taste with strong resiny hop notes. Clean, fresh, smooth mouthfeel. Dry, floral, resiny aftertaste with malty notes. Taste is quite powerful. Dry resiny taste with fruity notes lingers. Excellent! (0.5l bottle at Cardinal.)

(Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm, 17 Dec 2007) Dark amber colour with creamy, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of berries (raspberries, cowberries) and dried apricots. Malty taste with dark and/or dried fruit, wild berries and apricots. Balanced taste with a smooth and chewy mouthfeel. Slightly sweetish, but with hops to balance. Nice beer.

Bottle. Opaque, dark amber with a very lively off-white head. Aroma of red fruit, spice, yeast and marmalade. Mouth feel was chewy despite a fair bit of carbonation. Flavour of malt, citrus and a whiff of stem ginger with a short bitter finish. Enjoyable.

On cask. Amber color with a small layer of bubbles on top. Smells of steeped grains. Has a sweet flavor with a light bitterness mixed with malty grains and hints of honey.

The Crown, Nuneaton. Nose is booze with apple notes. Red, thick, syrupy and medicinal. Cheap red fruit and caramelised sugariness nudging towards Bavaria Red boredom/nastiness. Hints of strawberry and alcohol sting. Thin and sudden.

500ml bottle. Slightly floral, very slightly gingery aroma. Taste is a definite but not bold malty base with dark resiny hoppy bitterness which sticks to the back of the mouth. Covers the alcohol very well, very drinkable, and quite moreish. Absolutely nothing wrong or negative about it. However, perhaps it’s too subtle - from a strong ale I want something bolder.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a lazing orange head. The aroma is sweet and very malty. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of hay, leading to a bitter finish.

Amber/golden colored beer with a good persistant small biege head. Lots of citrus in the nose. Initially caramel, then turning to a nice strong citrussy hoppy ale. Bitter strong finish.
