Black, but lets quite a bit of light through, so perhaps deserves to be called dark brown instead? Throws a tall fine-laced beige head that really clings to the glass. Roasted barley aroma. Quite clean and enhanced by grassy English hops. Watery flavour with a little roastes character and a little sweetness towards the finish, but overall this is a rather light beer. Could have used a lot more malts. A bit bland and boring, but OK for a beer this low in alcohol. aobecksy (661), Middle of no where, Ohio, USA

Not sure about the Brewers namesake? It is an excellent smooth porter. Roasted chocolatey malts, very nice... kmweaver (2498), Sebastopol, California, USA

Pours a very dark cola color; fizzy, light-tan head with excellent retention and lacing. Generous, floral and banana and cocoa aroma; slightly vegetal (it sounds odd, but smells good). Medium, chewy mouthfeel: plenty of cocoa and milk chocolate; slightly overcarbonated and fizzy; some roasted malts and lightly bitter hop presence. Lengthy, roasted malt and bitter chocolate finish. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 6, 2007 Pours a dakr brown, nearly black colour with a very nice aroma of dark chocolate and coffee. Instant bitterness on the tounge is matched by a sweetness and a definite burnt flavour. Coffee beans stay on the palate for quite some time. Really good porter. Plus the Old Slug himself is surely the greatest beer character ever conceived! Lowe1983 (1029), Fairborn, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 22, 2007 Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is of chocolate, slight coffee, dark fruits, and some sweet malts. Flavor is strong of the roasted malts up front that give way to the sweeter flavors. A little lighter on the finish then what I typically like. A decent porter but not my favorite nimbleprop (951), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | May 22, 2007 Poured a opaque deep dark brown with a creamy, lacing slightly off white head. Smells of roasted malt, nuts, coffee but also a deceptive peat like hint of scotch. Flavor is heavy on the nuts and roasted malt, but a touch of those black currants they talk about, licorice and coffee. Light and creamy mouth feel, finish is lasting bitterness of light coffee. Heard this beer was a classic and I wasn’t disappointed. A porter-lover’s porter. Emil (6074), Copenhagen, Denmark

Sour odour and taste. Close to the original brown ale roots of porter. Fairly bitter too.

500ml bottle - gift from Fin - thanks! Shared with Scott, our host in Copenhagen, who’s a closet beer nerd, and was very interested in tasting English beer. So thanks from him too!
Moderate coffee aroma. Refreshing body. Pleasant burnt roastiness. Subtle hops and pleasant fruity esters. Very drinkable.
