Everything seemed subdued on this one. Hints of roasted grains and chocolate and not much else. Next. Holdwine (908), Beertimore, Maryland, USA

Pitch black ale (deep ruby when held up to the sun) with a mid-sized, creamy, off-white head. Good retention. The nose is soapy and lightly chocolaty with a touch of leather. Medium-bitter flavor is fairly non-descript with a hint of chocolate... just a rumor, really. Medium-bodied and watery with pillow-soft carbonation. Dries out in the medium-bitter finish. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 23, 2005 Bottle conditioned. Close to black looking with a slim beige head. Lovely chocolatey aroma, with coffee, licorice and some dark fruit. Taste ; it could do with more alcohol, but good nontheless; similar but less pronounced elements as in the aroma, light bodied. I should like to try the cask version. larsga (2969), Oslo, Norway
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 20, 2005 Big beige head of coarse lace on dark red almost opaque body. Sweet harmonic coffee aroma with licorice, pepper, and pine notes. Sweet, smoky, burnt taste; aftertaste is a strange combination of driness, bitterness, soot, and coffee. Strangely thin mouthfeel. The sooty bitterness doesn’t really do it for me, but definitely a quality brew. Papsoe (14997), Frederiksberg, Denmark
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 18, 2005 (Bottle 50 cl) Very dark brown, close to black, with a vague underlying reddish tint. Creamy, beige head leaving a pretty lacework. Aroma of hard roasted malts with a lightly burned note. Rather light body, very malty, lightly burned flavours. Dry, but still soft and very accessible. 281105 RooftopRogue (423), Champaign, Illinois, USA
| 1.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 3/5 | 2/10 | 1/5 | 5/20 | Dec 17, 2005 Only a hint of coffee can be detected in the aroma. It is brown in color with a decent sized head. The taste is a sour smoked coffee taste. Fortunately, the taste fades fast. This beer is defiantly worthy of its name. johninmelb (692), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 6, 2005 Very appealing nose of chocolatey dark malt with some raisins. Looks like coca-cola (about the third I’ve described like that recently, but what can you do?) Flavour is a refined, rich porter with a pleasant, slightly tangy hop finish. A good, solid porter.
