Aroma of plums and dark unsweetend chocolate. Loads of black coffee in flavour with traces of mocca, and dried fruit. Long intense aftertaste of coffee, burnt malt, hay and caramel. Feels bigger than 4.5 ABV.. maeib (4752), Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England

A beautiful black beer with a nice soapy looking head. The aroma is on the thin side but there are hints of chocolate malt. There are good coffee notes in the taste of the porter. It is nice and bitter and well balanced. Joeh (1908), Buckinghamshire, England

Portery, roasted/burnt malt and chocolate. Not something I really like. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 1, 2004 (500 ml bottle) Not a big fan of this one; A dry, moderately bitter dark roasted maltiness is complemented by a fairly bitter hops for a long-lasting, bitter, very dry finish; There is very little sweetness at any point in this porter; A yeasty flavor is present initially, but becomes more prevalent in the finish as well; The well-carbonated palate is very dry from start to finish; The nose is dry, lightly dark roasted, a bit yeasty, and kind of boring actually; Very dark brown and nearly opaque, except for some transluscency at the edges; Huge head explodes during the pour, requiring several minutes to die down before you can even pour a half-full pint of beer; Half an hour later, I tried to pour the rest of the bottle into the glass, and again, the head exploded, requiring an emergency sip to prevent overflow onto my desk; Slow-to-diminish heads like Guinness are great, exploding heads are annoying, so minus one for the overall score; It has exceptional retention, and possibly the thickest, densest clumps of head I’ve ever seen stick to the glass, so I wouldn’t even call this lacing; Bottle (over?) conditioned, with a fair amount of sludge in bottom of the bottle YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Sep 30, 2004 Visually appealing with a dark brown body with a nice beige head. Nose was of roasted or burnt coffee. Smokey. A bit on the watery side in the mouth. The flavor had notes of coffee and smoke. Nothing very special. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Sep 13, 2004 A dashing invertebrate, this Old Slug is, all monocled and moustachioed, (see label, if you can), but how does he taste, that’s all I care about...
Deeply, darkly black, as ebon as the night sky, with a full, lush, cocoa-tan head.
Aroma: richly roasted, full of espresso-ish notes, dark fruits, prunes, raisins, anise, maple..dang, me, I likes it!
Taste: kind of mild...nice, full mouthfeel, but the finish isn’t too longevitous, leaves too soon, very smooth, very nice. A good porter, of that there can be no doubt, with notes of chocolate and coffee riding through the palate and on out in the finish. Every recurrent meeting of lip and cup conjoins in some sort of happiness. Good porter, nice and delicious. This took time to unfold, and it was well worth it...but is it worth it to spend $6 for a 16.9 oz bottle of British porter (that’s what I paid), when you can find a 6-pack of excellent versions of the same from an American craft-brewer, for nearly the same money?
No, hook up with Anchor, Sierra Nevada, or Rogue...worth it for an excursion, but nothing else.

Bark brown body with a huge lasting tan head that left tons of lacing down the glass. Dry mouthfeel but full of molases, roated malt, earthy hops, rum, milk chocolate in the mouth. Finnishes with slighlt funky eathy hops and espresso. heemer77 (4311), Savannah, Missouri, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 30, 2004 Updated: Jul 13, 2005Bottle. Very black with a hint of red at the bottom of the glass. The head is a small and slightly tan. The sweet aroma of apples, tobacco and a hint of chocolate are enticing. The mouthfeel is relatively thin, but this is to be expected from a session brew. The taste, however, is relatively full. Notes of coffee, dark chocolate and a Little bit of walnuts make this warming. A friendly pint that would be best on a nice cool evening.
