Commercial Description:
Cask; Special.
This new beer has been especially brewed for this JDW beer festival. This amber-coloured beer has an easy-drinking character, with complex hop flavours and a zesty, lemon, refreshing finish. To celebrate 30 years of JDW, each hop variety in this beer has been added at 30-minute intervals in the boil, enabling each one to develop its own flavour and identity in the final flavour. Hops used: Fuggles, Goldings, Pilgrim

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms, Bristol 1/11/09. Deep gold with a tight white head. Aroma of hay, apricots, and grassy hops. Flavour started sweet, with some juicy fruits, grains and a moderate dry finish. Enjoyable.

Handpulled cask at JDW Charring X Rd. Amber gold with a thin off white head. Well balance strong bitter with plenty of fruitiness leading to a chrisp hoppy finish.

Cask, William Wygston, Wigston. Dark gold with a small head. Aromas are toffee and golden syrup with pear and spices. Flavours are sweet earthy pear with toffee. Some citrus and raisins with hints of chocolate. Dry on the finish. Good.

[Cask at the Monks Retreat, Reading] Deep yellowy gold with a negligible white head. Orange aroma. Flavour is very hoppy, but with very sweet banana citrus behind - so sweet that at times it’s almost sickly. Liked the hops, hated the sweetness, and kept switching between enjoying it and feeling vaguely sick. Long lasting citrus hop dryness afterwards. So - overall, certainly a very tasty beer, but unfortunately a badly balanced one.

Cask - West Gate Inn (JDW), Canterbury. Dark copper, a slight amber hue with a lasting, though fine white head, which left a tight, frothy lacing. There’s so much pear drop aroma on the nose it’s almost like spraypaint. Fortunately it’s not so evident on the tongue. Some pear drop, yes, but backed by fruity peach notes and a perfumey floral tone. Delicate, short bitterness in the finish, not much depth to the body, soft carbonation.

Cask at Bankers Draft (JDW), Bedford, in ’Spoon’s BF ’09. Copper gold with a small white head. Delightful sweet fruity aroma with pear drop and banana. Sweet sticky taste with honey, malt and mango. Late sharp bitterness. Excellent.

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Copper gold with lasting off white head. Some syrup on aroma, some esters, some raw alcohol to be honest. It’s a strong golden ale along the Summer Lightning role, some peach and apricot flavours in the mouth. Not much hop on finish. Nothing bad but just a more fruit than malt flavour or hops. Fine.
