Commercial Description:
Nearly solid black in color, this is a full-flavored complex brew of roasted barley, sugar and a hint of honey. Once poured, the smoky aroma melds nicely with the creamy head for a beer drinking experience not for the timid. Brewed at Sudwerk for ReaperAle.

Bottle at Barrios’ Impromptu Tasting to pop Smitty’s Surly. Very dark brown pour with some ring of head. Nose and flavor notes is full of roast, smoke, ham, milk chocolate, bitter chocolate, licorice. Coffee on the finish. Very well balanced. Dry and easy drinking. Medium thin on body but that is what I have come to expect from a foreign stout. Nicely done!

Bottle back from VA over thanksgiving. Big on the bitters in this one. A hint of chocolate in the background flavor. Beyond that though I did not get a lot else. Aroma is bitter again but the kind of bitter from a roasted coffee type of thing.

In short: A slightly problematic stout (but I think I got a bad bottle). Needs re-rate
How: Bottle 22oz, sent my way by hillbilly, thanks Joshua. Consumed a month after receiving it but age unknown (I suspect this is an old past-due-date bottle)
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head
In long: Nose is roasted, old coffee filter and hint of wine vinegar (ouch!). Taste continues with the same elements. Roasted dark malts with some coffee notes. Some cigar leaves. Fruity notes have a little tartness (blackberries, and such) that don’t quite fit in. There were light vinegar notes in this bottle and this was clearly the beginning of an infection but it wasn’t strong enough to make it really unpleasant. Anyway I’m not gonna go into too much details describing a beer that (I think) wasn’t it was supposed to be. I should have suspected something when I noticed the message under the bottle cap “Better luck next time”.

Reviewed 12/25/2008 (bottle): Pours a very dark black brown colored body, with a small tannish head. Woody chocolaty coffee aroma. Very chocolaty smelling, maybe milk chocolate. Very carbonated, chocolate flavor. Cleanish aftertaste. Watery-ish taste. Nice chocolate taste, a little roasted coffeeness. Has a dry taste, somewhat dusty. Pretty tasty.

Bomber from BevMo, Valencia. Nose of roasty coffee, chocolate, very light smokiness, and caramel. Black with a medium tan head. Flavor of chocolate, light bitterness, a slight burnt note, and some white pepperiness. Finish is lightly bitter chocolate.

Bottle. Thought this was discontinued. Pours a black body with a tan head. Sweet malty. Lots lots of toasted malt. LIght coffee, caramel, chocolate, and honey. Over ripe fruit or their sugars.

22 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville shared by Alraomon. Pours a very dark reddish brown color with a small head. Aroma of chocolate, coconut, roasted malts and some earthy notes. Bitter slightly acrid roasted malts in the taste with some citrus, nuts and dark fruits. Medium-full bodied.
