Commercial Description:
Nearly solid black in color, this is a full-flavored complex brew of roasted barley, sugar and a hint of honey. Once poured, the smoky aroma melds nicely with the creamy head for a beer drinking experience not for the timid. Brewed at Sudwerk for ReaperAle.

Bottled. Dark mahogany color with clear maroon edges. Minimal beige head formation, some weak lacing around the edges. The aroma is sweet and smoky with a slight note of marshmallow and vanilla-creamed coffee. Very metallic tang in the flavor that does not meld well with the aroma. One-dimensional character of smoke and honey. Very dry palate that has a weird and unpleasant tartness. Pretty much a disappointment, and eventually a drainpour.

Bottle. Big thanks to Mr Bendo for providing me with this long awaited bottle. I don’t know how old the bottle is and I was a little nervous opening it up, but it seemed to have held itself together well. A nice balance of chocolate, coffee and cream and a little yeast plus a touch of hoppiness make it smooth and quaffable. Well done.

Boy I didn’t like this. I don’t know for sure if it is off or what. I have had one of these years ago, but not since newly contract brewed. Aroma is almost non existent. Some roasted malt and a little biscuit come through. But fairly bland. It is also quite thin. Bummer.

Pours a jet black with s small tan head. Aroma of coffee, malt, chocolate, barley. Flavor is dark chocolate, malt, coffee, roasted barley. Has a dry bitter finish. Body is a bit watery. Ok stout, but think the reaper is kinda a wuss to be honest.

Black with a lasting tan head. Some creamy and caramel aromas, as well as some cocoa and roasty aromas. Roasty, bitter, licorice, and still a little bit of hops in the taste. Medium carbonation and higher than medium body. Good beer as it was, probably even better when fresh.

Pitch black with a brown head. Nice malted cocoa mocha powdered sugar aroma. Smooth full body. Rich, hearty taste of rosted and chocolate malts with some pit fruit sweetness. Enjoyed this one. 1.21.2007

06 vintage 22oz. Poured deep black with a 1/2 frothy head. Malt, chocolate, and coffee to the nose. A bit thin for a stout, almost like a porter to me. Not bad for 2 years of age. Enjoyed this one!

Pours virtually black, with dark chestnut edges showing when backlit. A foamy tan head settles to a swirly, wispy film with a small edge. Scant traces of crumbling, web-like lacing marks the glass well. The aroma is deeply malty and roasty. Dark and baker’s chocolate meet chewy nougat, roasted caramel, and copious amounts of dark fruits. Alcohol soaked figs are spiced with heaps of anise, dry oak, and vanilla. The flavor is roasty and creamy, with dark, anise-infused chocolate starring. There is a bit of a smoky component that seems to come from toasted oak. Bitter, earthy hops show themselves towards the end. There are alot of Baltic qualities in this one, particularly in the dark fruit realm, though it is ultimately too roasty to be considered strictly Baltic. Medium-full bodied, with a lively palate, this one finishes dry and woodsy. Very nice overall. Interesting.
