Sweet dark caramel aromas mingle, slightly out of step, with licorice and aromatic spicy hops. Fairly light on the palate. Hops seem to control the tastes with licorice root and strong allspice. Minor malt role in this one. Some light caramel and a hint of burnt malt. Dry and dark malt linger. Just not my type of amber. Of course there aren’t many that are. Thanks DocLock for the sample. roder60 (1028), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Sep 24, 2005 Says this is an amber ale, but it was really much more like an ipa if you ask me, though not a very good one. Poured a deep ruby red with a large amount of froathy burgundy head. Really looks rather appetizing. Aroma is very very hoppy and abrasive, not much fruity balance. Flavor is likewise not very balanced and pleasant. Starts sweet and malty but then quickly shifts into an overly abrasive, hoppy finish. Overall, i was not a fan. mephisto (1144), Taiwan

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 12, 2005 Clear, deep copper appearance with a thin, white head and moderate lacing. Caramel malt aroma with light floral qualities. Although decently hopped, the taste leans toward the sweeter, maltier side of the spectrum. Nicely carbonated with a slightly astringent finish. jasonp (1513), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Sep 12, 2005 Pours a beautiful deep red, almost mahogany with a medium off-white head. Caramel and a touch of floral hops and smoke in the nose. Flavor has notes up front of toasted malt, caramel, toffee, (munich malt perhaps?) and some floral hops. Pretty sweet but backed up well by a solid hop presence. Moderately bitter. Finishes with the slightest touch of cherry. The mouthfeel is very full, round and creamy smooth on the palate with lively carbonation. No lacing left on the glass, head retention is ok. Overall, a very nice drinkin’ beer. This beer had much more floral, piney hops in the nose than I expected, good balance and nice hoppy finish. A decent "red" that is more IPA like. LilKem (1210), Marietta, Ohio, USA
