The head is above average in size and is of an off white hue. I get some big time roasted nuts in the aroma, and definite carmel, like before it gets hard, if youve ever made carmel it has the same aroma as when your cookin it up. the flavor is, to say the least, burnt. Definite bitterness up front, reminds me much of scorched popcorn. In time the flavors do come through, lots of burnt butlike malts, becomes thicker. Not bad if you like the burnt thing. Decent beer, especially after the bashing i heard from shag about their products at ABC. barleyPops (1081), Quad-Cities, Illinois, USA

Aroma of caramel malt, spices, some hopcit. Tastes malty, with some fruit, brown sugar, hops, and spice. It all doesn’t quite seem to jive on the tongue, but the underlying complexity and quality still comes through. Solid. richlikebeer (832), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 19, 2005 bottle, thx to goldtwins. aroma was nutty and fruity, apples to be more specific. color was a medium reddish color with a solid layer of creamy head. a little bit bitter right up front, but smoothes out into a nice malty body. all of the flavore elements are pretty understated. the apples are there, as are some nut flavors and a slight bit of chocolate. the tail repeats the bitterness of the front end, but not too bad. a medium mouthfeel but feels a little bit astringent in my mouth, as if it is making me more thirsty. overall, a decent brew.l Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 18, 2005 Bottle. Nice fluffy egg shell white head sits on top of a light amber colored body. Aroma is maltywith some nuttiness. Taste is hoppy right up front with some malt backbone. Flavor is smooth bodied that doesn’t exactly quench the palate. Drinkable and a bit dry. A bit smokey but finishes clean. rajendra82 (704), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 14, 2005 Reddish amber body topped by a foamy two finger head made this a decent looking beer. The lacing was well spread out along the sides of the pint glass. The aroma was mildly nutty and malty. The taste was soft, sweet, and evocative of apples, pears, and oranges. The mouthfeel was soothing, and a hint of smoky roastiness could be detected in the aftertaste. Easy to drink, and not dumbed down, for some reason I had never sampled this local staple until now. The loss was all mine.
