| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 6, 2008 Bottle from jrob_21 - thanks, Jonathan! My 50th porter. Dark chocolate aroma with a smattering of aroma hops. Touch of biscuit, too, along with a hint of coffee and what I know to be oatmeal. Coke-colored pour with a light-brown head (and good, lasting retention). Dry, roasted taste with the oily, slightly acidic undertones I’ve come to love in oatmeal stouts; also reminds of coffee without the burnt espresso roast. Only lightly bitter, and then only a times, with just a bit more sweetness. Touch of wood. Watery body with just a little bit of crackle; aftertaste is dry and roasted and leaning pleasantly toward an ashen feel. Alcohol very well hidden. Basically a thinned version of the Dark Horse stouts I love, with the "oatmeal" coming through much more than the "double chocolate". Hugely drinkable. Pleasant, well-made porter! | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 7, 2008 12 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with TheBeerCellar. Pours a very dark brown with a thin tan head that faded to a ring after a couple of sips. Very pleasant aroma of chocolate, roasted malt and to a lesser extent, coffee. The flavor is more roasted malt than chocolate with some tobacco flavors as well. Light bitterness and a bit dry on the palate at the finish. dmac (1503), Toms River, New Jersey, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Apr 3, 2008 12 oz bottle from shp555, thanks Steve. Pours a deep dark hazy brown with an above average size soapy light beige head. Aroma of bitter chocolate, oats, cold espresso beans and slight grapefruit rind hoppiness. Chewy medium to full bodied with noticable cabonation. Nice flavor of burnt espresso beans, burnt malts, vanilla that finishes with a strong burst of carbonation and bitterness. After reading the label I had a strong desire to become a mason but then I realised that would entail doing actual work so I just grabbed another beer instead of seking out an apprenticeship. kmeves (1081), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA
