Draught. Pours clear black with a small, rocky light brown head, somewhat diminishing with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, chocolate), light hop (herbs), average yeast (leather) with notes of plum and dates. Medium bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a chalky finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

6/30/09 notes: on tap at brewpub, served in a rather clunky goblet. Appears dark brown, clear, and with a small cream-colored head. Aroma displays chocolate malt upfront, then earthy qualities and some nuttiness. Palate is smooth, maybe a touch thin, and with finishing dryness. Flavor is sweet and dry, but rather pleasant in its simplicity. There is a bunch of chocolate, malt and hazelnut. The finish adds a hint of toastiness, though this does not encroach on the overall sweetness of this porter.

Reviewed 1/2/2009 (Tap @ Red Can Brewery, Torrance, CA): Pours a very dark brown color body, small off-white head. Chocolately roasted aroma. Sweetness too. Roasted coffee chocolate taste. Nice chocolate goodness. Carbonated mouthfeel. Some nuttiness in the taste. Very roasted.

Draught at the pub 03/08. Opaque brown dissipating light tan head, no lacing. Light roast chocolatey aroma. Flavor is malty some roast that lingers with some burnt toast character, a nice drinkable porter. Medium body.

Draft, consumed at brewery on 01/07/08. Very dark brown with deep brown highlights. Nice head retention, no lacing. Roasted aroma (subtle). Flavorful! Nuts and roasted sweet malt and coffee. Some bitterness on finish. A good, strong porter, this will be my first order next time I’m at Red Car.

Slightly bitter, dark brown ale with minimal aroma, a malty taste and a nice malt finish. A tasty porter, but a bit watery. Still, I’ll have it again.

Tap @ Brewpub: Dark brown, semi black, no head and light lacing. Nose of dusty roasted malt, mostly baker’s cocoa and dark tea; fair amount of hops. The flavor is balanced, plenty of hops vs. the stale roasted malts and a sweet nutty caramelly finish. Comes across more like a brown ale on the palate.

Dense dark brown appearance. Mild aroma. Coffee roast, well charred palate, creamy chocolate. Mild roasty bite in the finish. Decent flavor.
