Commercial Description:
Strong Celtic Ale. Deep golden-red colour, rich, intense and complex malt flavours. As unique, delightful and as rewarding as a finding an unguarded dragon’s treasure hoard.

Dark copper pour with a creamy off-white head. Aroma shows lots of sweet caramel, but also quite a bit of hops, with lots of resin, mint, and earthy notes. Quite interesting! Flavours are dominated by rich malt and soft alcohol. Lots of treacle, smoky peat and nutty notes, with little of the hops present in the aroma. Very rich, the alcohol if pretty full on. Very thick chewy body, which suit the beer well.

Bottle. Pours muddy brown with a creamy beige head. Great aroma of dark rich malts, chocolate, raisins and some spicy tones. The flavour is the same and results in a smooth mouthfeel and good bitterness that leads to the finish. Nicely balanced. An enjoyable strong ale.

Bottle 330ml. Great strong beer. I had this with some chocolate, and the blend was sensational. The aroma had toffee, butterscotch, and also alcohol. Sweet flavour, not overwhelming, with a final touch of bitterness. Velvety mouthfeel, medium body, slightly alcoholic finish. Colour is dark brown, it has particles, and the white head doesn’t last.

Bottle. Pours dark copper with a small off-white head. Nose has a slight medicinal quality to it, notes of malt, brown sugar, cherries and toffee. Flavour is on the sweet side with sweet malts, apples, blueberries, burnt sugar and port all featuring prominently. I’m not really sure what a ’Strong Celtic Ale’ is and it’s not a classic English Strong Ale but I think, taken on its own, that this is a pretty nice beer, even if you wouldn’t drink many in one sitting.

Slightly yeasty nose with some citrus from the hops. Pours hideous - muddy diarrheoa brown with no head to speak of. Flavour is ok, but the sweet sultana-like malt gives way to an over-egged alcoholic astringency that carries into the finish. Ultimately a bit unsatisfying.

Pours ruddy brown with a small tan coloured head. Nose has sweet fruit, peach and apricot with brown sugar. Reminiscent of many aussie brewed belgian darks. Palate has sweetness early on before dark malts take charge to deliver a burnt tofee and bitter coffee-like finish with sweet malt lingering in the background. Interesting, has a little bit of everything. Don’t know how true it is to style though...enjoyable all the same.

Bottle. I didn’t pour this carefully enough - it’s very dark and I got a fair amount of the sediment, which did settle out in the glass after a while. So initially it was a muddy brown, but it cleared to a deep red brown. There was little head. Rich malty aroma. Full body, almost oily, with very light carbonation. Flavour was predominantly rich alt with a dark toffee or treacle taste. There was a reasonable amount of complexity and some bitterness to balance the sweetness. An enjoyable drink, but not an every day drink.
