Commercial Description:
Dark amber colour, made with a good amount of a secret, dark and mysterious bush honey. The honey had aromas and flavours of apricots and raisins, we also used a blend of traditional and roast malts, and the hops used are supposed to add notes of plum pudding. This is a well balanced, intriguing but subtle beer. The name comes from my great grandfather’s champion yacht, Queen Bee, 27’6” which dominated the Norfolk and Oulton Broads racing in the early 1920’s. At the time the Colby family were prominent boat builders, with a long nautical history in Suffolk and Norfolk.

Bottle. Pours dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of honey, chocolate, plum and alcohol. The flavour is sweet honey/toffeeish malt, chocolate and a peppery taste presumably parted from the alcohol. A strange mix to be honest and at no point is the beer intriguing to drink, but having said that I like the innovation of the brewers to try something different. Very sweet finish. It’s really not that bad just rough around the edges.

Bottle. Pours dark clear ruby brown with a short light tan head. Aroma is of cocoa, caramel, malt and honey. Flavour has very little distinct honey but you can tell its there from the slight influence it has on other flavours: malt, chocolate and coffee notes all have a slight twist from the honey. Quite light for a porter, this is still an ok beer but it seems like it could have been a fair bit better.

This got a bit better as it warmed. Dark brown body with a ruby tinge and a short head. Sweet malty aroma with hints of raisins and probably some honey. Smooth taste, don’t notice the alcohol, not big flavours but don’t expect that with a porter.

Poured dark brown with ruby highlights and quite good clarity (when up to light), head formation was limited. Nose is dominated by honey (duh!) and caramel with a hint of toffee. Palate is a little more reserved, as far as the honey goes. Displays an abundance of sweet caramel malt and toffee with a rather short malty finish. (kinda reminds me of an ESB without the substantial bitterness)

Bottle (330ml). Poured opaque with a good sized, tanned, dense, foamy, head which lasted very well. Strong notes of bitter chocolate and coco powder in the aroma with roasted malts, prunes and some licorice. Flavor was of bitter chocolate with roasted malts, nuts, leatherwood honey, molasses and some licorice in the finish. Medium bodied with medium carbonation, a dry/creamy mouthfeel and a good finish.

Gusher from the bottle which made a mess of my carpet. Opaque dark bronze. Sweet malt aroma and a really sweet start to the flavour for a short time. Then there was a very light roast and moderate bitterness with some alcohol in the finish. I was not well disposed to this after the explosion and the brevity of the taste didn’t help.
