Commercial Description:
Red Oak is a Munich Urtyp (old style) lager. We begin the brewing process with custom kilned imported Munich malt. Red Oak is then is the hopped with Spalt Noble hops imported from Bavaria, the oldest hop growing region in the world. Before fermentation we add a yeast strain from Weihenstehpen, the oldest brewery in the world, founded before 1040 AD. Weeks of aging gives Red Oak the smooth taste its known for.

Draft in Charlotte. Pours a reddish color with a foamy white head. Nose is lightly hoppy with a caramel sweet malt scent. Palate is fizzy and medium bodied. FLavors of light hops with a toasted malt note and caramel hints.

Draft at Wild Wing in Winston-Salem. Aroma is grain, caramel, and apple. Flavor is more of the same, a little grainy with Munich malt and a hint of Noble hops. Palate light and somewhat watery. Not too exciting overall.

On tap at Macaroni Grill, Cary. Light malt sweetness with a bit hit of apple juice. No hops discernible in the nose and there is just a bit of cranberry. Medium amber clear with light haze and thin white lacing head. Medium watery body with medium-high carbonation. Starts sweet with caramel malt and some light acetaldehyde apple fruity taste. Watery overall with weak sweet nutty finish and smooth dull after.

I question the freshness of this lager. Hazy amber pour with a short lived head and drippy lace. Caramel malts on the nose. Grassy hops, caramel, citrus, and nuts.

Yeah, not a fan. This had the flavor of muted or spoiled apple or cranberry juice. Definitely a juice-y character to it, except that it’s also sort of bitter and abrasive.

Only available on tap this beer pours an orangish color with a light tan head. Spells of honey and some fruit. Tastes like a macro brew lager with a slightly skunked aftertaste.

Being from the Greensboro area, I absolutely love this beer. It is a great beer to drink with a steak dinner. It has a nutty & caramel taste and looks great coming out of the tap. The only problem I have is that the Brewery doesn’t bottle it yet, so I have to go to a local bar and pay $3.00 to get it.
