Commercial Description:
Red Oak is a Munich Urtyp (old style) lager. We begin the brewing process with custom kilned imported Munich malt. Red Oak is then is the hopped with Spalt Noble hops imported from Bavaria, the oldest hop growing region in the world. Before fermentation we add a yeast strain from Weihenstehpen, the oldest brewery in the world, founded before 1040 AD. Weeks of aging gives Red Oak the smooth taste its known for.

A hazy to orange to brownish color w/ an ok initial head and some but minimal lacing. The aroma was of honey and caramel malts. The flavor was of strong caramel malts, this one came off far too sweet for a lager. Maybe some grass hops in the finish after warming, but this wasn’t impressive.

Had this brew at the flying saucer. It had an orangish color to it, no real head. Had a bit of hay and straw in the aroma and almost riciness in the body. Not very good.

Reddish brown with a small head. Aromas of sweet caramel malts lead to a bready flavor, similar to buttered toast. Some fruitiness follows and it ends clean and smooth. I had toured this brewery in 1998 with the brewmaster and had forgotten how easy this is to drink. The only downfall is that it’s draft only.

This brew entices with a honey mead color, yet with no head, accompanied by an almost nonexistent aroma. The complexity of the palate is nice, as far as simple beers go. Straw, lemon with light hops and wheat make this seasonal somewhat ho-hum.

Tap at Red Oak Brewpub. Amber in color, tan head. Very slight bready taste and aroma, quick finish.

Light orange in color. With a fruity aroma. Fruit overpowers this beer. I am just not a big fan. There are definitely better beers in NC.

On tap. You can only get this beer on tap. Not a great beer, but it’s good when the selection at a certain bar is limited to crappy domestics. That’s the only reason I drink it - nothing better to drink. Amber color with a good head, not much of an aroma. Decent malty taste with some grassy hops. They named this beer well because it does have an oaky taste to it. Sweet caramel taste with a sour aftertaste.
